Placed order online Sunday October 23rd. Line was burried by Friday October 28th. Technician called Monday October 31st to confirm install. Nov 1st. 0815 technician was on site. 1100 Fiber was lit and tested and 30/5 service for 55$ a month was hitting 30.80MB down and 4.65MB up from several sites. Repeated testing shows this all clean.
So 6 business day later after placing web order on a Sunday night Im on FIOS.
The ONLY negative is the crappy d-link router. How in the world did they decide to use them. I program routers and this thing is the pits what a waste to an otherwise fantastic experience. I will hook up my linksys and make it the dmz point from the d-link since it only seems to get 18-24mbps compared to the full bw from the d-link. Up stream is maxed on both on the d-link. I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 801.11b 4 port V4 with latest firmware. I may just decide to go to the latest from linksys since others are reporting its able to fully hit max on FIOS.
PPPoE is so yesterday ....why not just use DHCP and Mac address allocation? Its faster and allows any router to run full out.
The technician was knowledgeable and walked me through all setup and testing. Clean install fantastic service and turn around
12/01/2005 - 30 days now with no issues or speed degradation, i have burned through multiple ip addresses 25 HOWEVER this was entirely due to my having to restart/boot router as i replaced my router and router firmware and each time had to reconfig since the last reboot/and home power blip,,,serious storms as of late the longest ive managed to hold same IP is 7days I feel that will change once i put the router on backup power to keep it from cycling.
The PPPoP still blows but all things considered Im getting what i paid for. The 30/5 package makes telecommuting better than being in the office now. I subscribe to giganew.com and get 29.8mbps routinely no matter what time of day.
Worldwind downloads also are able to max out just over 30mbps and when you need to pull down multiple gig files that comes in real handy. What used to take hours takes minutes. Its been absolutely worth the 55$.
And for anyone who says "Oh you can't possibly need that much bandwidth" ...All I can say is that Bill Gates also thought you wouldn't need the Internet or more than 512K of RAM either.
UPDATE: 1/25/2006
I've not had any outages of any kind. Phone service has also been flawless. 30/5 is working as designed and speeds are consistantly 29-31 and 2-4.6mbps. I have no complaints except for goofy assed PPPoE constantly giving me new IP addresses...but thats mostly due to bad dhcp services with dd-wrtv23 and i have to reset...prob solved with static...not pretty but my ip address will remain stable as the router won't have to be reset until the dd-wrt folks can fix dhcp and related.
So I am thrilled to be using it...also it appears my Comcast issues were related to my pedestal to house cable losing signal...they replaced and now cable TV is best its been in years...they figure the signal loss also severly affected my internet service as well. But for 10$ more i get 5X their highest speed offering and I'm not looking back.
UPDATE 05-07-2007 New TV services added last week
Well its been over 18 months now that I have FIOS internet and now I am FIOS TV there are no issues other than goofy remote issues to speak of and those are to be resolved later this summer with the new interactive guide thats being rolled. Picture quality is 8.5 out of 10 to 10 of 10. The VAST majority of channels are 10 of 10.
The quality in large part depends on the feed from the service provider but why is it that the comcast sports channels is CRYSTAL clear on FIOS but fuzzy blurry pixelation mess on comcast is beyond me.
I have the movie/sports package the Multiroom dvr and 2 stbs. I was going to get an HD but since it cant stream from the mrdvr i will wait till I get the hd tv im looking at.
The only issues are the known no page up/down and day up/down with new remotes...why they rolled it out that way is beyond me i still think they should correct that now rather than later.
Enable all HD/STB to play well with the multiroom dvr's ability to stream. Allow the remote to control the aspect and feed setting as opposed to having to manually change on the mr-dvr.
I am very very pleased with the picture quality. The clarity is astounding and it was nice to see that they had to install attenuators on all the line due to signal strength being to strong...
So I am now an all verizon customer....and so far so good i am quite pleased with the quality of all the services.... Now if they could just rollout DHCP to everybody....
UPDATE: 11/14/2007 - I am still enjoying fios goodness.....img isnt really all that bad for the average bear though it will require tweaking to enable all its goodness thats really buried a bit too deep for most.
Internet is still rocken but my 4 year old router is push it, time to upgrade to take advantage of speedier routers that can handle the HD VOD services that are now on the FIOS TV service.
I have had no outages since the yahoo cut service to 1/3 the county with a backhoe... phone, tv and internet all have been outstanding and with my new 37" regza tv its been great at night to finally really enjoy HD goodness. Im starting to really use the dvr as well.
I really look forward to next years massive HD rollout and absolutely recommend fios still for those looking at alternatives..
I work from home and i beat up the phone and internet and have ZERO complaints.
The $200 a month is for ALL services, TV( 3 outlets, 2 stbs, 1 HD MRDVR), PHONE (freedome+ plan) and INTERNET (30/5).
10/15/2008 - Have all whistles and bells and biggest internet pipe available and for the money its been worth every penny I pay. No outages except by idiots with backhoe's and even then fiber is repaired first given its fewer strands carrying more traffic that the 2" copper bundle.
