Almost been on FIOS for a year and I must say that I am completely satisfied. Even with my company VPN use, my wife downloading of music, and my Xboxlive play (all at the same time) I cannot notice any type of network slowdown. Power was out for about 2 hours in once instance, but once the power came back up, internet, phone, and tv all started working again immediately. More than satisfied with FIOS.
*********************************************************************************************** Been waiting for Verizon FIOS for over a year, since I first heard about it. To tell the truth, it was half way the reason why I moved to the area that I moved to. Well, for the past 6 months, I had been checking the Verizon website to check to see if I was eligible. Gave up for awhile, and then I checked about 2 weeks ago, and it stated I was eligible.
I chose the 15U/2D package for 44.95 a month. Not bad considering I was paying Comcast $72 a month for 8MB DL/768K UL.
Install time was scheduled for the notorious 8-5 time frame. To my surprise, the tech showed up @ 9:00am sharp. Tech stated that the install would take about 3-6 hours. Well...he was done by 1:00pm, dropped both the battery back up and ONT in my living room (direct connection to my Xbox). Only problem, the guys who are supposed to bury the cable didn't get my order until the day before the install. So the tech had to string it along the tree line (Coincidentally, it's supposed to snow bad tonight).
Well, on to the important stuff
DLink Router PPoe 9 email addresses Advertised speeds: 15MB DL/2MB UL Speed Tested (Speakeasy D.C. Server): 12.39MB DL/1.77 UL
Overall, satisfied with my inital experience with FIOS. Verizon is known to mess up very simple orders and such. But I"m happy so far.
2/17/06 Update: Verizon finally came out to bury the fiber optic line after about 4 calls and 2 months. No change in QOS, but the ugly temporary drop is gone (which my wife reminded me of weekly). Got home, temporary drop was gone, and internet was running fine. No noticeable downtimes, my XboxLive gaming has improved, I'm actually playing Xbox, and have had all PC/Laptops (4 in total) all running at the sametime, with no slowdown.
2/24/06 Update: At the suggestion of other posters, I did a speed test directly from the router. Came up with the following results:
14.9 MB DL 1.7 MB UL 50.3 ms lag.
Pretty good if I say so myself. ******************************************************************************************************
03/07/08 Update. Service is still going strong. I have multiple laptops (3 total), all running different applications (VPN, Bitttorrent, websurfing) utilizing the line all at one time. No noticeable slowdown ever. Upgraded to the 15Mbps DL/15Mbps UL package for a time, but it appeared overkill. Downgraded back to the 15Mbps DL/2Mbps UL package.
