    My Other Reviews·EarthLink
Update: Hard to believe that it has been two years but, just to let you know, FiOS service has been rock solid. I still can not believe what we are getting for $35/month. If it is available in your neighborhood, I recommend you jump on the opportunity.

Update: It's been two weeks now. There have been a few brief interruptions on the PC with the wirless connection but otherwise the connection has been "rock solid" and the speeds have consistently been about 90% of advertised. Excellent value at $34.95/month!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------

The service was just installed three days ago but I am submitting this preliminary review to replace my old Earthlink one. I will update it as the situatuion unfolds.

Ordered the basic 5 Mbps/2 Mbps service for $34.95/month.The order/install process went very smoothly, especially because the main floor of my house is pre-wired with Cat-5.

The installation proceeded just as it was described on the FiOS website. A couple of days prior to the final installation, a Verizon contractor came out to run the fiber optic cable from a nearby telephone pole to the side of my house, where he also installed the ONT (optical network terminal). On the next visit, a Verizon employee hooked up the battery backup package and connected the cable to my Cat-5 wiring and a D-Link wireless router.

I have two PCs with NICs that were connected directly to the router. My wife has a laptop and a PC that were connected via wireless cards. The laptop already had one in it but we asked Verzion to provide one for her PC.

The Verizon guy configured the router, PCs, and laptop, and we were off to the races wirh near advertised speeds...or so it seemed. Turns out the D-Link wireless adapter Verizon offers at $59.99 is crap and its PC was crawling along at a snail's pace. We had them uninstall it and I bought a Linksys WUSB54GC at Fry's for $49.99 which is much better.

The good news is the charge for all of this installation, because we had them take back the wireless adapter, is supposedly zero, zip, nada! Verizon is so interested in rolling out FiOS that the installer told us there will be no charges on our bill other than the $34.95/month because we signed up for a year.

As you might expect, I have done numerous speed tests over the past few days and they have pretty much been within 80-90% of advertised. I will update this review as warranted but my initial impression is, crappy wireless adapter notwithstanding, this is a great deal that everyone should consider who has FiOS available in their area.

    Enjoy the ride, FiosDan!!!
Us folks that live in the Federation Outpost of San Luis Obispo, CA-well, we're still w/ATT?Yahoo or Charter "Pipline". Even though CalPoly San Luis Obispo HAS an OC3 system on campus.
Not to mention, a level3 interchange south of town-within city limits by the way.
