I have been using Verizon FIOS 30/5 service for about 2 years now. Still great. Uptime has been fantastic. I have the double play (Internet and Video). Video service has been good, and PQ is better than Adelphia ever was in my county. Occasional video pixelation, but nothing to complain about. Video pricing has gone up about $5 (to $52.41 for Premier + 1 SD Box + 2 Cablecards + 3 DCT-700 basic boxes) in the past year and a half, but data (30/5) has remained the same (at $54.95)
Overall, I would go FiOS against pretty much anything else out there.
No, Verizon is not perfect (just look at their multiple billing systems), but they are the best available in my area (IMHO)
=================================================================== I have been waiting for FIOS for about a year now. Installation was done by a very easy going, friendly verizon tech. Wiring was done just the way I wanted, and in about half the total time as they advertised. (took about 2.5 hours total)
Some of the install speed was likely due to the fact that I was very prepared for the visit, including pre-running CAT5E cable from my office to the area where the FIOS line enters my house.
Setting up the Actiontec Router (huge box) was very simple. Silly active-x control on the verizon activation site, but at least that is only a one-time thing.
Speedtest to speakeasy resulted in a very promising 29Mb/s Down, 4.8Mb/s Up. Not bad for 30/5 advertised.
Best of all is the fact that FIOS in my area did away with PPPOE, so I was able to just use standard DHCP after doing a MAC address clone on my D-Link DGL-4300.
Performance has been outstanding, with no outages since install. Since internet connection reliability is so great, I have convinced my wife to get rid of Verizon telephone service, and save some money by using Vonage VOIP instead. Gotta love the irony in that!
