    UPDATE -- 6/23/2009:

Upgraded to 15/5 for $2 more a month. The process took about 2 days as they "forgot" to reboot the ONT. Now I'm getting around 22mbps/10mbps!

    UPDATE -- 6/30/2008:

After calling in 6 times about the free speed upgrade, I asked for assistance in Verizon Direct here as the billing department had no clue about their own press release.

Anyway, I'm now getting 10/2 for the same price of $42.99!

I ordered the service on around December 28, 2006, over the phone and scheduled the installation date on January 8, 2007. Before the installation date, the contractors came twice to mark where the fiber was to be buried and then to actually run it to my house from the street, where they finished laying the fibers about 2-3 months ago.

On the 8th, the installer came at around 8:30. He called beforehand to confirm that I was in, and a Verizon rep called several days prior to confirm the order. Anyhow, the installation lasted only about 3 hours as I already had a CAT5 in place, though he re-organized it to make it look as inconspicuous as possible. He placed the the ONT near the NID on the side of the house and the backup battery in the garage. Surprisingly, he left copper in place.

While he replaced the wall jack panel in my room, I told him that I wanted to use my own router. He pleasantly agreed without any resistance.

Initially, I wasn't getting the 5/2 speed I ordered, but it turned out to be my computer's TCP/IP settings. He tested the speed with his own laptop. Then, seeing that I was fully capable, he asked if he can leave.

Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Now I'm waiting for them to offer 10/2 service for the same price like in some other states.
