Update: 7/2/2007
Well I've had my FIOS TV and internet service for two full weeks now and it's time to give a review of the services.
FIOS TV: Love it! I've had some issues getting my TiVo to work correctly with the FIOS Cable box but after following the setup instructions from TiVo many of my more serious problems were resolved, but this has nothing really do do with FIOS TV (this is a TiVo issue). Anywho, don't count on your FIOS tech to know how to properly connect your TiVO to your cable box unless the person already has experience do so. Lots of channels and many that Comcast only offered as premire stations. Picture quality is the best I've ever seen then again, I've only ever had Comcast. Can't beat the price. I'm getting a helluva lot more for my money than I did from Comcast.
FIOS Internet: From the beginning I wasn't getting anywhere the speeds I should but didn't bother calling it in. Just last week I finally called tech spt to get assistasnce with my internet connection speed issue. I used VZs online chat to talk with tech spt and explained my issue and the rep asked if I was connected and I had explained that I was connected via wifi and she immediately told me that speeds were not guaranteed via wifi (which I understand) however, the tech that installed the system did not allow for a hard line to my desk. The router was about 10-14 feet from my desk yet I was only getting half the signal strengeth I should so I just wanted assistance to see if we could improve that.
The tech spt rep asked me if I could hard wire the connection and I said yes but only if I take my pc over to my TV where the router sat. I did it and she was able to connect remotely to my PC and ran a speed test and onfirmed that I was getting the speeds that I should. Of course this is where tech spt fails to listen to the customer. I explained to her that I understood that but it was the wifi connection that I was concerned about and doing speed test via a hard connection is not the same. She then attempted to run an optimizer on my system (still via the hard connection) to make things work better but that failed.
I end up doing this again with another tech that seemed to be impatient with me thus I was impatient with him. I tried to explain to him that my installation was not done with a hard wire to my PC. He then ran two speed tests to confirm that he was correct (while all the while doing this via a hard connection).
Needless to say I didn't want to deal with that tech anymore so I just gave up and will try other avenues to get things done.
Update: 6/20/2007
After making my original post, I was contacted by a Verizon (VZ) representative by the name of Chris. I was skeptical when I first saw the message in my inbox but when I saw that his address read (verizon.com) I felt comfortable talking with him.
He asked my name and phone number and promised to get to the bottom of my FIOS install issue. I was doubtful, but to my surprise, things started happening at a fast pace. I dont remember the exact time, but I think it was by about 930 am that I received the first call from a VZ rep. promising to fix the problem. She assured me that they would get someone out to my place, that day. I was already leaving work at 11 to meet the Comcast rep. but just as I got into my car a VZ tech by the name of John called and said he was at my place looking at the line going into my unit. I told him I was already on my way home and would be there in 15 minutes.
When I arrived the two techs were ready to get to the bottom of things. I'd say within about a half hour or less they isolated the problem and began installing all the equipment. Needless to say I was a little surprised because by this point I had already received several calls from two different VZ reps. checking on progress and promising me that they would be with me until the job was complete.
I begin to suspect that Chris must be someone important because every VZ rep. I had contact with after I exchanged emails with Chris were doing their absolute best to make this happen. Unfortunately, I don't feel comfortable with people jumping through hoops that way BUT, there were a lot of gremlins that made my install complicated and if it were not for Chris' intervention I don't think any of this would have been resolved.
The installation took a while to complete, but the onsite techs were not leaving until the job was done successfully and, I am most grateful to them for it.
I want to give a really big THANK YOU to Chris and all of his staff for making this happen for me because I have been wanting FIOS since I first read about it here on DSLReports. Despite the false starts your staff was courteous, confident and very attentive. I cannot express just how happy I am that you made this happen for me.
I'm extremely happy with my FIOS service and you can bet I'll be pushing friends and family to make the switch. Verizon FIOS is a better value over Comcast hands down (at least in my area) and I can't wait to show it off.
Thanks again from a very happy new customer.
H. Morgan
Now all I have to do is get this damd TiVo to act right.

join:2006-03-01 Perris, CA | get the right speed , run the speed optimizer when u are going wireless and it should give u at least 12000 instead of 7 , what happens is that u ran it when u were going hard wire so only the nic on the pc got optimized and not the wireless. | |
