UPDATE -- 10/17/08
I'm now on the 20 / 5 plan, and its incredible. I get around 2.5 megabytes per second when Im downloading demos from PSN on my PS3!!!
Verizon gave me a killer deal on bundling FIOS tv with the 20/5 internet plan, and I just couldnt pass it up.
********************************************************************************************* UPDATE-- 9/25/08
I had FIOS tv installed on 9/23, and the picture quality is amazing! Ive had FIOS internet for about a year now, and ZERO outages, and consistently fast speed. I couldnt be happier!!
*********************************************************************************************
I have been waiting for FIOS for a long time... I used to have Roadrunner, and I tried the various speed packages (as high as 15/2 at one point). The thing I hated the most about it was the inconsistent speeds...especially later in the day (gotta love bandwidth sharing..)
When FIOS finally was turned on, I jumped at the chance. For the same cost per month that I was getting 4 down, 384 up, I would now get 10 down, 2 up. One thing that irritated me is the fact that since I do not have a LAN line, I had to sign up for automatic credit card deductions each month...with all the billing horror stories I have read, Im a little nervous. I wasnt going to let that stand in the way though.
I scheduled my install date. I had to work on the install day, but my wife was home. I left the installer a note with where I wanted things. The day of the install, he called me and recommended against where I wanted the ONT, and backup mounted because it would end up looking sloppy based on how he had to bring the fiber in. He said that he would still put it where I wanted if I really wanted it there though. Very classy of him to consider the look of the install. I was impressed. I had him put it where he wanted to put it. Everything went super smooth. He did the MOCHA install, and was in and out in about 3 hours. He called me when he was all done.
My wife called me a half hour after that in a panic because she couldnt get on the internet. When the FIOS guy did the test, he tested it wired to the router. We normally use wireless. No big deal..after two minutes of telling my wife how to find/configure the new access point, everything was great.
My speedtests (wireless on the laptop) are at 10,150 kbps down, and 1,800 kbps up. If I open the web browser on my PS3 and do a speed test (PS3 is wired to router) my download is 10,300 kbps, and 1,850 kbps up.....just amazing! Best part about the speeds is that they are the same whether I do it at 4 PM, or 11 PM. Love the consistency!!
With my old service, on my PS3 downloading a 800 meg demo from the Sony store would probably take 4-5 hours.....I tested FIOS last night, and I pulled an 800 meg demo down in about 9 minutes!!!!! WOW!!! I'm seriously speechless at that still... I also configured my Wii, and my and my son's Nintendo DS's to use the FIOS service with no issues.
Anyways, I can't recommend FIOS enough! I have the 20/5 package available for $10 more if I want it, but I honestly dont even need it at this point! I rated tech support in the middle because I havent had to use it yet, so I dont know what my experience will be.

@rr.com | LAN Line?? I'm a little confused about the "LAN Line comment". Do you mean a "land line"? I got a good chuckle out of that!

| Nintendo DS + Fios = BAD How did you connect your son's DS to Fios??
My son's been angry for a while because his DS wouldnt connect to Fios.
I think its because of the PCI Slot not being in Slot 1 or something. Thats what the nintendo site said. Any idea how to change it?

| Re: Nintendo DS + Fios = BAD I configured both of our DS Lites for FIOS. I was having issues letting it work automatically, so I went into the router settings and manually assiged two IP addresses (as static)in the router settings. Within your router settings, go to:
"Advanced", then click on "IP Address Distribution". Then click on "Connection List" at the bottom.
On the next page, click on "New Static Connection". You then need to enter an IP address from the routers range. In the physical address column, you put the DS's MAC Address (which you find on your DS within the WIFI settings). Set the lease type to "static". Then save your settings.
Next, go into your DS WIFI configuration settings, and manually setup the connection to use the same IP address that you assigned in the router settings. The DS will not let you leave that screen without entering a value for the primary DNS...use your routers IP (192.168.1.1), and you should be all set. Save your settings, and do a connection test. It should work.
Thats how I did mine, and my sons DS...

| Re: Nintendo DS + Fios = BAD UPDATE ON THE DS SITUATION...
Out of the blue, my DS's would no longer connect online. After researching this quite a bit, the solution was changing my network authentication type within my actiontech settings from Open key to shared key. After I did that everything was golden again, and has been ever since.
