    My Other Reviews·ooma
I switched to Verizon FiOS in March of 2007 and have been extremely happy with the service in the 14+ months I've had it. I have the Triple Play bundle and am paying less than what the sales rep quoted me. I added the sports package so that I could get the TVG and HRTV horse racing channels, and am still paying less than I was quoted. I have the standard 5/2 internet and it's been rock solid. I had previously been a Vz DSL subscriber, and the speed increase is great, especially the upload speed. I switched my TV service after 9 years with Directv and have no regrets. I was a bit reluctant at first, but with all the recent price increases at Directv, I was able to maintain basically the same channel lineup, and increase my internet speed for less than I was paying previously. Plus I get HRTV, which isn't available on Directv. The installation took about 7 hours, but that was mainly due to the conduit across the street being frozen. The weren't able to pull the fiber line until they dug it up and it thawed out for a couple of hours. I have no interest in HD or a Vz DVR. I'm quite happy with the SD service, and I have 2 of my own standalone DVR's that work just fine. My only gripe is with the IMG upgrade earlier this year. They removed the ability to schedule a channel change using the reminder feature on the SD STB. However, I have been told by a Verizon Direct Forum tech, that they plan on fixing that in a future upgrade. With the 3 free digital adapters I received in May, I have the full channel lineup on 5 seperate TVs, while only paying for 2 STBs. I'm really loving that. I highly recommend Verizon FiOS.

Update: 10/13/09. FiOS is still solid on both the TV and Internet side. They did fix the issue I described above concerning the Reminders not changing the channel. It works fine now. Not as nice as the Directv receivers I used to have, but as long as I can get the channel to change when I'm not home, I can live with it. My current Triple Play package expires at the end of February 2010. At that time I will be switching to the Flex Double Play. I just bought an Ooma Core VoIP system, and it works just great, so I will not need the Verizon phone line any longer. I will never have a phone bill as long as Ooma stays in business. I'll save between $25 and $30 per month by dropping the Verizon phone. The bundle package prices have increased, but Vz has also increased the internet bandwidth. I wish they offered a lower end internet/tv bundle, as I have no need for HD or 25 or even 15Mbs of bandwidth. I'm quite happy with the 10/5 I have now. Since I want the the 2 horse racing channels, HRTV and TVG, I have to go with the higher priced Extreme bundle which is $94.99. Unfortunately I am told I cannot buy the sports package as an add-on on the lower double play bundle. I'll be paying for bandwidth and HD that I will never use, but the savings from not paying for the phone any more will more than make up for it. I continue to recommend FiOS for TV and Internet. Make sure when renewing your service you mention that you will be checking out the competetion and you will be sent to their retention department where you should be offered discounts or freebies as an incentive to continue with FiOS. I plan on doing this at the end of February. Last year I was given a $180 discount at $30 per months over 6 months. Don't settle for their advertised bundle prices and insist to the CSR that you will be calling Comcast or whoever the local competition is. I will be reviewing my Ooma Core in a week or 2, but so far I'm happy with it as well.
