Was a previous Comcast customer. Due to reliability issues (needing to call Comcast at least monthly to fix problem...seemed to always be associated with their physical plant outside my house) I needed to make a change. FiOS just became available in my area. After being left high and dry without internet on Memorial Day weekend, the wife and I decided to order FiOS.

Package ordered: Initially just ordered the Double-play TV and Phone due to still having contract time left with Comcast (was on Business-class acct). About 8 days after calling Verizon, installer came out. Was very professional...installation took about 6 hours. The tech installed the ONT near where the old POTS demarc was located and ran the fiber in from the street. Just as a note, we have a VERY long driveway (about 250 feet) and that required a long length of fiber as well as being hung from the poles leading in from the street. Battery backup for the ONT was installed in a nice spot that didn't interfere with anything. We had ordered 4 STBs to be put in...Home DVR, two HD's and a standard. Tech took the time to check each of the existing coax lines to the rooms the boxes were in for proper signal strength. Boxes were installed...he waited until they each downloaded the program guides then made sure they call would work properly with the multiroom DVR. Did a brief demo and left. One minor snag we ran into was the DVR box died three days later. It's a Motorola box and I had similar experiences with Comcast. However the difference was I called Verizon and they sent me a new box saturday overnight with activation instructions and an RGA label for the old box. Problem solved!

I just had the FiOS internet installed this morning. Tech came and did the provisioning. Checked to make sure I had internet (my home network is pretty extensive...good thing was I had it set up so all he had to do was just plug the ethernet from one of the LAN ports on the Actiontec router into a port on the gigabit switch for my home network.) after I rebooted my PC's to get new DHCP leases, checked to ensure the other tech had properly grounded the ONT, and that was that. He had me to go one of the speedtests available out there and we checked to see what kind of speeds I was getting. I am provisioned with the 25/15 package but was showing 25 down and about 21 up at a couple different servers.

The only gripe I have is I have run into the infamous NAT table filling up if I do anything that uses a torrent system to distribute updates (like World of Warcraft). I have read a few FAQ's about how to put my own router into the frey so I may try to do that. I wish I knew about running the CAT5 from the router to the ONT before the guy left though!

At any rate, I am a much happier camper at this point. I have not had any down service for TV or phone since the first install and I am hoping the same remains true for the internet portion. FiOS FTW!
