Update June 2011:
Left FIOS in May. The Verizon Billing Bug got to me... 5$ more a month (more than any non packaged price) and no way to fix.... Cablevision made me a good boost+ offer so I left... What a shame... Truly a great product but billing hasn't changed in the 8+ years since I have left... It's still somewhere between stage-coach and WW2...
As long as boost+ performs (so far it does) I won't come back...
Update Sep 2010:
All is good. Speed is 100% solid - no complaints and dream speed for the money...
Update Feb 2010:
Received initial bill online: All ok
Automatic payment: All ok
Speed: Rock solid - never a glitch - a dream connection....
Ordered online on a Friday.
Monday 9am the outside crew is there burying the connection to the house (ground was unfrozen enough) - as I happened to be home I was able to ask them to bring the line to the point of entry I wanted (which is different from where they where going to originally) for an inside mounted ONT (my Demarc etc. is all in the Basement).
Forward a week to the actual install appointment:
Tech scheduled for 8-12 arrival and is at the house at 9. We walk through location and I make my request for Ethernet install (no problems there). With the outside work he had to complete (including hookup of the line that was buried earlier) it took approx. 3 hours start to finish... Professional workmanship - including the entry point into the house....
Once all is setup I swap back to my TEW-633GR router that I used with OOL and everything is working great.
Consistent speed - no slowdowns whatsoever... We have a winner!
This is not the Verizon I remember (see background) - I am happy that I gave them another chance...
I switched from OOL to FIOS. FIOS has been available in my area for a while but I always dreaded going back to Verizon. I left them in 2002 going from 3 POTS and 2 ISDN lines to OOL and VoIP. My memories are full of disappearing trouble tickets, missed appointments. Probably took 5 years of my life for getting massively upset way to many times... So I didn't imagine I would come back...
OOL has peak slowdowns for me for the last 3 years. Switching to boost (at a $65 pricepoint) solves the issue but why do I need to... Speed I was getting in the evening where unacceptable to me. Last year a capacity improvement (node split) made things a bit better but in December the issue resurfaced. So I decided to give Verizon a chance again...
