January 2011

Plan: It's a promotion; 35/35, Ultimate HD with Showtime for one year, ~$95/mo with taxes for year one, then I think ~$110/mo taxes for year two.

Internet: Speed is great! I had Cablevision for three weeks and canceled it because I was paying for Boost Plus (50/8) and getting an average of about 30-35/7.5. FiOS supposedly gives you a speed bump on the download side if you subscribe to TV, so my speeds are 42/33-35 depending on speed test.

TV: We don't really watch it but it's a better value to add it into your plan. Channels are good and the menus/channel changing are a lot faster than Cablevision.

I forget if this was a contract or not.

February 2012

Downgraded to 25/25, internet only, since we weren't watching TV. $75/mo with taxes. Only problem we had was reps trying to re-sell us to TV because they couldn't believe that we really don't watch TV that much. Also, the 35/35 tier was surprisingly overkill for me. I rarely uploaded at a full 35Mbps and only downloaded from websites at 35Mbps a handful of times.

---------------------------
November 2013

Upgraded to 50/25 + local channels because with a two year contract it came out to $60/mo, or $15/mo cheaper than the 25/25 internet only for $75/mo. The 50/25, being that we have a video package, comes out to 58/38 which is a nice bonus.

The local channels were also a surprise, because I was expecting the basic national broadcast networks plus a couple local NJ stations, and we actually get 95 stations. Sure, most are crap/filler, and some aren't technically "stations" (10 or so channels of non-stop commercial loops for TV services?) but regardless, 95 is still a lot. I don't even need a receiver for them (despite the best efforts of uninformed sales reps saying otherwise); my TV has the QAM digital tuner required for receiver-less viewing.

Again from my previous reviews, I had two reps try to upsell me to a higher TV package when I called in with a question, a mere ten minutes after activating my new package.

Edit: I can max out my upload/download speed easily now.

17 August 2014

Just received the free upgrade to symmetrical speeds this afternoon. 50/50 becomes 58/61 with fluff. Now at 58/61 + local channels for the same price of $60/mo.

---------------------------
October 2015

My 50/50 and local channels bundle for $60/mo for two years was expiring next month, so I used the chat to see if there were better options than what the website said. The rep assured me $75/mo was the best price possible and I should lock it in. I said no thanks, and he copy/pasted the benefits of the speed/service which I know. Continued to say 'no thanks, I'm going to let my plan expire and go to Cablevision'. Suddenly I'm transferred to an account manager who renewed my same plan for $60/mo for two years. And then I see the contract and it's actually $50/mo for year 1 and $55/mo for year 2, $10 less and $5 less respectively! I'm waiting for my next bill to confirm new pricing. Edit: Looks like $55.62/mo for 2 years.

Had Gigabit installed yesterday, internet only. Speed tests are all over the place, but ATT and Comcast seem to be most consistent. From those two tests, it looks like my upload is where it should be at 900Mbps+, but my downloads clock in at 250-650Mbps at best, depending on speed test. I thought it might be the speed tests being unable to handle the connection, but I've seen other users getting 900Mbps+ up/down on the same tests. I even tested directly to the ONT, same speed issues. I also updated the Good/Bad/Bottom line sections.

Edit: Verizon is sending me a free G1100 as I had an MI424 Rev I which I was told was compatible but apparently it's not.

Edit 2: G1100 was sent, and didn't change anything. A couple weeks after install I upgraded my computer to the Verizon (and Comcast) recommended i7 7700 and 16GB Memory (as well as a new motherboard) and voila, speeds are perfect across multiple testing platforms except DSL Reports for some reason. I was also testing on a Surface Pro 4 with Gigabit Ethernet to USB 3.0 adapter; the Surface got correct speeds on some tests and not as good on others which I think was due to its dual-core i5. Also received bill for $69.99/mo as advertised, with no taxes or other fees. It was about 9 days from order to install, because I needed a specific day.

---------------------------
April 2019

Still have Gigabit, but there seems to be a slight slowdown (congestion?) on the download side. I've found a couple file hosts that can max me out, but I seem to top out around 850Mbps, sometimes a little less. I've stopped using speedtest.net because I'm fairly sure I'm maxing out those servers--I usually only see a max of 600-700Mbps down regardless of server. I usually get 800-850Mbps down from DSLReports' test. Naturally I get ~930/~940 on the Verizon test. I'm still on the $70/mo promo that doesn't expire, but if I was offered 500/500 for $40-$45/mo no contract and that didn't expire, I'd probably switch to that.

Edit: No slowdowns, the problem is there's only one server nearby that can max me out on SpeedTest, and it's surprisingly not Verizon's. Bill increased to $73 over Summer 2019.

switched over from Comcast

I switched over from Comcast and saved myself just over 20% off; from $88 down to $70 monthly; while at the same time boosted my download speeds by five times and boosted the Comcastic upload broadband internet speeds by at least over seventy five times; I have finally joined the Gigabit broadband club achieving near Gigabit rated speeds on both download and upload broadband internet speeds is nothing short of amazing; Comcastic is in the rear view mirror and disappearing fast; if one has not signed up and can actually do so; its a "no brainer" I will not be going back to "Comcastic" anytime soon; thought "Comcastic" points out in pathetic usual "Comcastic" fashion that is completely amazing; their are not even any devices that can use Gigabit rated internet speeds; that is simply incorrect: Nvidia Shield Pro Android set top OTT box that I use with Kodi to watch and stream free movies and show; using Exodus, Stream Hub, Specto, Terrarium TV, all manner of free Kodi third party plug-ins; I am actually getting a second Nvidia Shield Pro Android set top OTT box for my second LED HDTV television to Comcastic's dismay and utter shock that I dare to implement my cost cutting Kord Kutting Comcastic cable tv programming plan; oh well life's tough and people are cutting the cord by at least a million subscriber's per earnings quarter now!

usb ethernet adapters suck

I think its the adapter. Even though its USB 3.0, I tried finding a usb gigabit adapter for my parents computers and their shiny new FiOS gigabit internet. Litterally all reviews on Amazon shows they are a PoC. Sucks too because They have decent computers.

Re: usb ethernet adapters suck

My adapter is good, it can support the full speed. I get the same speeds with my USB-C adapter vs my other computer with the ethernet port built into the motherboard.

Which adapter is it if I may ask? I wanna get one for my moms old MacBook Air and Lenovo work laptop, all which use USB 3.0 only, no USB C

Re: usb ethernet adapters suck

»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· H982VWX/ is my main one

»www.amazon.com/gp/produc ··· GDHD3VC/ is another I have. This worked fine IIRC; I used it a couple times but switched to the other one/other link since it was smaller

I use both with a 2018 MacBook Pro. If your speeds aren't good, make sure your computer meets FiOS speed requirements; slower computers can't handle gigabit speeds. My Windows computer is a quad core i7 and my MBP is a 6-core i7. Verizon's requirements: »www.verizon.com/support/ ··· -gigabit

My GF had a USB-A/USB 3.0 ethernet adapter for her Surface Pro, that achieved full speeds too.

Were you just looking for an excuse to tell the world that you have a GF?
