I guess you could say that, given my level of entrenchment, I am content with 1and1. They host several domains of mine which run several applications, so migration wouldn't exactly be easy should I find a webhost that fulfills what I'm missing.
1and1 is behind the times when it comes to their facilities. Apache 1.3.x, MySQL 4.0.x, and PHP 4 are still the standard fare for all shared hosting accounts. You can request that PHP5 be enabled on yoru account, but you are stuck with the latter two. What really tempers my praise for them is MySQL. As technology progresses and web software takes further advantage of database technology, 1and1 users are left in the dust stuck on a server 3 point releases behind the current supported release. It is true that this won't affect most people who only care to install PHPBB and go, but it will likely affect developers who need a DB that supports stored procedures, triggers, and subqueries.
It wouldn't be much of a review if I only stated my disappointments. I am rather impressed with 1and1's uptime. Aside from a 5-minute database hiccup on or around June 2nd, I haven't had any memorable availability problems whatsoever in more than a year of service.
I suppose I can still recommend 1and1. If you have only basic needs and want a cheap host with lots of storage and bandwidth, they're right up your alley; however, I cannot recommend 1and1 for aspiring web developers and hobbyists like myself.
