I have been with Bell for several years and had no issues with them until just over a couple of months ago. I was not under a contract and was getting over 3 mbps consistently with no limits on internet usage and no bandwith throttling. Monthly bill was just over $50 per month.
It started when I purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. I noticed that with torrents there was significant throttling where I would only get about 200 kbps download for about 30 minutes or more before it started increasing in speed. My brother still had XP and was not getting throttled. With my old computer with XP, I also was not getting throttled.
What took it over the edge was when I saw on the Sympatico website that my location could get up to 7 mbps. I called them up and asked them if I could indeed get speeds faster than my current 3 mbps. They assured me that I could.
Long story short ... I didn't get a faster speed. And worse, they took me off of my no contract and couldn't restore it, which meant that if I wanted unlimited internet usage, I would have to subscribe to a plan and pay more than what I was previously paying.
I searched on this site and was considering either TekSavvy or Acanac. Because of the price, the 1 month free trial, the 1 month guarantee, and Paul's service, I went with Acanac. There was no problem with the 1 month trial and no problems over the past two weeks with the actual account. During this time, I was consistently getting over 3 mbps.
I was planning to call tech support to see if they could try and get me on a faster connection (just to see if it could be done). You know what??? .... I just discovered today that I am getting over 4 mbps! I found out during one of my torrent downloads when I hit 4 mbps. So I went to three different speed test sites and each one gave me similar results. This actually shows that Bell doesn't know what the hell they are talking about ... if they had gotten me this speed, I probably would have still been with them. Luckily for me, they are that incompetent
Anyhow, things are going great. If anything, the only thing that was lacking was the support for the modem. I received it with only a quickstart guide which did not provide any information regarding how to change the internal settings. On the other hand, they had already preset the modem and all I had to do was connect it to my computer and start using it. However, my ports needed to be forwarded, but luckily I found all the information I needed on this site and on www.portforward.com.
Since I now don't have to deal with tech support, I guess I can't really comment on that. However, I won't penalize Acanac for that, but I can't give them a 5 either. So I settled on a 4 ... I hope that's fair.
If anything changes (touch wood), I will update my review.
Thanks, Acanac ... I'm one very satisfied customer!
