visit »www.acanac.ca/Webhosting.html for exact details and pricing. I signed up for the 10 / 10 MB/s plan.
Something a little different. Aka VPS (Virtual Personal Server). I was a little hesitate to try out this new service offered by Acanac, mainly bc of their support problems. I jumped in knowing that if within 30 days I was not satisfied, I would be refunded my money.
First, let me state that I was a complete Linux noob. Which scared me a bit, bc I wasn't looking forward to google everything I needed to do.
I was setup on April 20th. I must say I enjoy the getting 10 / 10 all the time. Never had a problem with speed. I always get 10 / 10 MB/s 24 x 7. Torrents run full out. No throttling. Newsgroups run full out. No slowdowns (using giganews). If you're looking for speed, rest assured you'll get it. To access the VPS you use !M (No Machine). There are occasions where you're kicked off !M. No problem, just log back in, but if you were in the middle of a compile or something else, you have to start over. The included apps are decent. If you want something else, just install it. Downloaded video content can be streamed right from the VPS. No need to download the movie, just stream it. Unfortunately, this is where the service needs to improve. You can't stream iso's or vob's because there is no way to mount an image. Another issue I've run into is long running intensive jobs die. For example, I can't rar up large files (+500 MB). The process will die with a error message user abort signal detected. And since there is no support, there is noway to get this issue looked at. Too bad.
Bottom line, this service and tier I'm on suits me. I looked at other VPS services, but Acanac offered the best value for my $$. It's great to be able to share files with friends and the VPS will max out their internet connection. I download games patches or demos and my friends then download them from me. It's great to have access to a central repository of files.
PS Being a noob, downloading and compiling a newsgroup nzb program turned out to be fun and stimulating. I got hellanzb working great. hellanzb and screen works great together. I can ftp in and drop a nzb file and hellanzb will fully process it. On the torrent side, buoyed with my hellanzb success, I switched to rtorrent and again running it in screen. As with hellanzb, I can ftp a torrent file in and rtorrent will happily process it and seed it to my ratio level I've setup.
