    To whom it may concern:

If you are going to order Pacbell DSL Basic service, please beware. There are many downsides to the promotional offer. I don't believe Pacbell has done a thorough implementation plan when they began this promotion. The $39 may seem very attractive, but it is not all what it is cracked up to be.

    1. Remember once you sign-up with Pacbell, it is a one-year contract. If you decide to terminate your service prematurely, you will be stiffed with a $200 penalty charge.

    2. If you're going to host a webserver, ftp server, or any server for that matter, the uplink speed is 128kbps. At this rate, it is no better than two 56k modem running in tandem or a single ISDN line. The 128kbps is a speed cap, which means you never surpass that speed.

    3. Don't even bother trying to call techsupport, because the waiting time averages 45-minutes. Even if you get a chance to speak to one, they may not necessary be able to troubleshoot and resolve your problem.

The techsupport person whom worked on my machine crashed my system when he began requesting that I remove certain conflicting software that he believed had caused their software to malfunction. In actuallity, the error was at the central office and had nothing to do with my computer.

    4. The installation process may not be as straightforward as they may want you to believe. My advice to you is never allow the service personnal to leave until you know the installation was successful and you were able to connect. If you were as dumbfounded as I was and allowed him/her to leave with your installation prematurely complete, they will not readily return to service your problem.

    5. Oh yeah, remember email, well, it is not always functional. You will get sporadic effects when you send and receive messages. In other words, your messages may not always reach its destination, and you may not always receive messages that you were supposed to.

To tell you the truth, if I knew what I knew now, I would not consider Pacific Bell as a possible DSL service provider. If you want to sign-up for residential DSL service, I believe Mindspring has a very attractive offer. Otherwise, continue shopping around; you will eventually come across one that will better meet your needs.
