I got this as a means to be able to travel (for work and play) and work (ie..working vacations), so that i could work from anywhere and not need to search for hotspots, or head to B&N/Starbucks (Keep in mind, so far, I've only been in and around TN and CA(lifornia). I rode the train from SFO to Sunnnyale and did'nt drop a single packet.
Because of the unreliability of Comcast I'm pretty much using this full time. It's not as good as a wired connection b/c the RTT to the tower (and this is totally contigent upon your proximity to the nearest tower) is ~100ms so there's that add 90ms latency that you would'nt normally have, but my work mostly involves SSH sessions so it's perfect for what I need. (The RTT however on the Caltrain in the Bay Area was a steady 20ms to the gateway).
Also the speed tests are not bad..I avg 500kb down and 200kb up, so while i'd use it for 90% of what I do do, I probably would'nt go downloading torrents or playing online games with it...
bottom line..it's an awesome backup for when you have a flakey provider who is clueless as to how to fix thier network and you need to update a ticket, and it's great if you like to travel a lot.
The reason I put everything as "3"s is b/c I did most of the research on my own using other forums, and Verizon's web page. I'm using the V640 (since it was 9.00 and I did'nt see any added features on the V740). Install was a snap..opened the box inserted the card, my macbook found the right driver, I just needed to add the phone number login and pass info and click connect.
Have not needed Tech support *yet*...
