February 2009 update: Still going strong. Upgraded to Sierra 595 about a year ago which supports EVDO Rev A. Coverage is quite good even in otherwise "fringe" areas. Speed/performance is excellent especially when in Rev A mode. Took a trip from NJ to SD, CO and back. Had service most of the way which was quite surprising, even had service in areas where my Verizon cell phone had difficulties making voice calls.

Good service for those situations where you're on-the-road and need connectivity. Had service most of entire trip to Florida from NJ along the interstates. Quite impressive overall!

I have the Novatel S620 card (non RevA). Speeds are frequently a tad over 1Mbps downstream when in an EVDO area with good signal. 1XRTT mode runs about 90-120kbps in bursts.

In some of the more remote areas we've travelled the service was not available. I understand that Sprint now has roaming agreements with other carriers outside their footprint so that may have improved. Will know more and be able to better evaluate next summer while RV'ing.

So far I'm pleased, though $60/mo may be a little pricey.

Re: we need upgraded in joplin, mo BADLY

Almost sounds like you're stuck w/ 1xRTT where ever you're at considering those speeds... At my home I only had 1xRTT up 'til just about a month ago which was indeed 50k-80k. I don't use this service at home (I have 5M DSL there) so it really was a non-issue. Just recently I discovered this area went straight from a 1x connect to EVDO Rev A! I also upgraded to a Sierra 595 card about a month ago too so that was a pleasant surprise... Sustained downloads are running around 1.5Mbps with uploads around 300kbps. Not too shabby! Worth waiting for IMO.

Also to note: Sprint seems to have enhanced their roaming capabilities now allowing 1xRTT roaming in Verizon areas. That's good news -- at least when I'm on the road this summer we should have a better chance of getting service in those areas where Sprint previously doesn't have service. We'll see!
