    I first tried Verizon service with a 5250 air card in my laptop. I had the service for a month in Tennessee and a month in Florida. 1xRTT was the only signal I ever got and it included a lot of no connections and cutoffs.

    I talked with Alltel a couple of times about the service but the local rep's didn't know a lot about it, since it was kind of new. Then near the end of 2006 I talked with them again and they were very knowledgeable. They told be I could connect to EVDO service with an air card or a EVDO capable phone hooked to my computer. I was surprised about the phone option for $25 and signed up right away before the option changed. I choose the Razr phone and a data kit that they had in the store. I hurried home to connect it to my computer.

    At home I put in the CD that was provided in the kit and it added the drivers for the phone and the Access software as well as an icon. Then I plugged up the phone with the USB cable[ that was included with the kit] and was connected. That is all there was to it. It was a very user friendly guide to add the service to the computer.

    I have had Alltel unlimited broadband wireless service for over a year and it has been good service. I use it on my Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP Sp2 Home with a USB attached Motorola Razr V3m phone. The setup has worked very good.

    I use the connection in Florida on EVDO and Tennessee on 1xRTT while roaming on Verizon. I will have to say that Alltel's service is much better than that I get while roaming on Verizon. There is a lot of the time that they don't respond and then sometimes the connection just quits working. That is very rare for Alltel.

    The only problem that I've had with Alltel service is the latency and ping times.

    But it is something that I can live with.
