This review is for Clear 4G not the old service, never had that.

First I found out Clear was available in Las Vegas. WTF is that? Ohh Wimax internet with affordable pricing! Neat. The only deal killer off the bat is the horrible rep Clearwire has. Geez! Sign 2 year contract with them? I must be nuts.

Nah, I've done it before (current longtime and HAPPY vonage/t-mobile customer among other things), couldn't afford the $115 for setup if I didn't have a contract, so I just went the contract route.

Where to start? Since the service had JUST come out, Clear had nothing on their website about sales locations, the phone support said they'd ship me a modem since they didn't have any offices. On google maps, there was a (long defunct) Clearwire office, then I found out on craigslist that Clear had JUST opened the kiosk in a local mall.

I went there, about 4 people standing around taking the sales person's attention, he didn't even notice me so I just sat on the kiosk until he did (lol). In the mall they wee getting 1 bar of reception on their home modem, but the sales person assured me I would be "pleased when you get home and plug it in" - took less than 5 minutes to get signed up, but they do require the first month's payment in advance (and from there on, it's automatic on your bank card).

I got home, plugged it in, and I was indeed pleased. Again, no real need to do anything, the modem just fired up, I got online, and a day or two later it gave me a sign up screen (the internet was usable the whole time, though!)

It speed tests anywhere from 2.5mbps (rare) to 10mbps! Not bad for paying for 3! It's solid as all get out too, only thing is mine would drop out a few times between 3AM and 5AM every single day.

Still have it, I LOVE it.

    horrible!!!

i signed up almost a year ago and ive spoke with clearwire (cw) about why the modem has all bars filled but when i am on a game with the xbox 360 the game shows my connection is 1 out of 4 bars conectivity as i play the game is choppy and glitches the whole time! internet downloads arent any better either. when i play games i am only on the modem not thru the computer i.e. no windows are open to interfere, and the rep on the phone swears that there is no interferance of electrical devices in the way and there is no reason i shouldnt have optimum internet access! but i do and its on a day to day basis! everyday. all day. 24hrs a day. period. i think they know something i dont like the problem is obvious to them but it would incriminate them and jepordize my contract of 2 years! i dont know what to do, i costs money for internet, which is sub-par and i pay for gaming online which is sub-par due to my internet!!! so let me get my cash-shovel and pay my bills agian this month! only a year and a half to go!!

    Re: horrible!!!

Do a traceroute and see what your latency is. This IS a wireless service, so it's never going to be as good as, say, fiber is. If your immediate hops are over 50 ms then that would explain a bit of that.
