LAST UPDATE 1/5/20100
Cancelled account. $30 ETF so not that bad. Got a virgin mobile usb card and gona try that. Im still living on my JB iphone 4. Thank you mywi!
bye bye clear..............
From good to bad -.-
Clear recently launched in San Antonio and they said I can get their services so I decided to go for it after years of dial up. Got the 3mbps down with 1 mbps up for $30 a month. You can lease or buy the equipment but the home modem was only $70 so I decided to buy it rather then lease it for $5 a month. Got home and hooked it up but had no signal. Moved it around the house and got 1 out of 5 bars at the kitchen and decided check out the speed. Got on and did the simple registering stuff and was on the web. Did a speed test and got 5mbps down ON ONE BAR! Upload was a little on the slow side with .1mbps but its probably because of the signal. Also the latency was 142ms. On dialup I use to play realtime games with a latency of 300ms so im gona try xbox live and tell you the results. Im just happy that I can finally get something better then dial up. Thank god for clear coming into town. 4G FTW!
Update 11/08/2009
Lost signal around 3pm today. Still have my dial up connected so I got online with that and got on the clear website to chat with a rep and they say they have a problem at the local tower and it should be fixed within 2 hours. Other then that its been smooth so far. Still getting 3mbps down. I can play gta4 with a friend with no problem but i get some problems when playing with other people. I can also play runescape which I have been playing for years and it seems faster now due to the lower latency I have now which is around 150ms. on dial up i believe it was 300ms. Will keep you up-to-date if anything else happens.
Update Evening 11/08/2009
Signal was still gone so went back to chat with the rep online. They said that I am not in the coverage area. WTF? I was in it all last week and now im gone? They said I would have to call tech support but I really dont got time to do all there run arounds. I moved the modem where I first had it and I got 1 bar. Better then nothing I guess.
Update 11/9/2009
Still have a bar on the modem and this is the last day of the trial. I can back out now or go for the long nasty ride............
too bad they didnt put a antenna port on the modem. That would really help me. Right now im thinking of going outside and looking for the best signal and put it in a weather proof enclosure.
Update 6/2/2010
I cant take it no more. It drops non stop. Cant even play a game online. I get 1 to no bars. If TWC comes down the road *prays*, Im going to switch. I hope they let me out because I cant use it where I live. I can take it to my friends house and get 10mbps down but I can barely get 1mbps down at my house. Again, I hope they make a modem with a ext antenna port on the back. It should work well for some people like me.
Its awesome when it works but when its out, it sucks! So if you are interest in clear, look at the map. If theres alot of dark green around you, I would give it a shot or see if you can get a modem to demo at your house. If you are in a spotty coverage area, dont even bother. Stay with your landline if you got one. Only reason I got this is because Ive had dial up for ages and wanted some kind of high speed internet. Im not interested in 3g or satellite. Wake me up when LTE arrives (and if theres no cap).
Update 6/5/2010
*throws modem at wall*
Its been out for more then a good part of the morning. Ive been checking out »192.168.15.1/ and i see the antenna but cant connect so I went outside and put it on the hood of my truck and got 2 bars. facepalm. I went to get my laptop and saw I was connected at another antenna. If you move it a little it goes to 1 to no bars. I swear this wimax crap is so damn picky on its signal. Shouldnt this shit go further then 4.5 miles? Why the hell cant they make a damn modem witha external antenna port for people like me that get a weak signal. Hell I bet if you are 5 miles where the signal ends they will still sell you the service. All I hope is that time warner cable or even AT$T come down my road with something. We have talked to our county commissioner since we dont have a city council and he said he is looking into why we dont get cable and hes going to provide us with a number to call. You know what also might be the problem is that CPS energy recently put a new meter where I have my modem and its one of those wireless meters so they dont have to get meter readers down our road any more. Ah this shit gets old after awhile. I would tether my iphone when os4 comes out so I can have a back up internet but if you got to pay $20 more to tether, screw that.
Again I ask Clear to get a home modem that has a external antenna port so I can buy a antenna and point it towards the nearest tower. They dont have to officially support it but it would be a plus. If they dont do this in the near future, I hope they let me out of my contract. It doesnt make sense for me to reset my modem every damn hour when I lose a signal. Where I have it right now is the only spot I get a signal. And now theres that new meter reader for the electricity, I just got screwed since its wireless. And again I pray for high speed internet via landine. That damn broadband plan better help me out. This shit gets old after awhile.
Update 8/1/2010
*Takes apart modem to tinker with it*
So it just came on a few minutes ago. Its been out for 3 days. On day 2 I called and they said oh, It shows that you are 4 miles away from the antenna and that you shouldnt be getting service. ARE YOU SHITTING ME? They say they can let me out of my contract because im so far away. I guess thats a good thing if I had another ISP to go to other then dial up but for now I cant walk away. I need this internet to do school this month. I need to get it working somehow so im going to try something that a co-worker told me. It involves 2 antennas and a certain length of BNC cable. Something to do with the wavelength that can boost my signal a few decibels. Other then that im still checking with TWC to get some cable down here. Hope that broadband plan helps us out less then a mile away from san antonio city limits.
Update on that modem with the ext antenna port, they say they are still beta testing in washington. Im not holding my breath for that.

Switched modems with the gemtek home modem. Seems a bit more stable but still lose connection alot. Dont even connect to it when I get home. Use my JB iphone 4 for wireless tethering. Does the job. Even gets on xbox live but a con is the strict nat. If it was opened it would be perfect but cant complain. Unlimited data plan ftw. Clear told me that I could get out of my contract. Might take them up on that offer soon.

| | | Got Clearwire Today
Clear just launched yesterday in cincy and i like testing new technology so i ordered it up about an hour after getting the mailer yesterday (free month so i'll try it)
Out of box...plugged into wall....was up in running in about 3-5 mins litterally. I live within throwing distance (1/2 a mile or so) of 2 towers....Speedtest on speakeasy and speedtest.net are ranging from 9mbps-19mbps and i'm capped @ 1mbps up.
This service (assuming those speeds stay there) is a great product for those on the go. I don't think it's yet in the ballpark to be comparable with the Cable service around here who is overing 20mbps for a slightly higher price and is obviously more reliable. I've done a lot of reading up on 4g and WiMax II and LTE.... and i must say i'm impressed, we are no where near what this technology is capable of here in the states (overseas it does 300mbps down and 75up) but it's a great start. | |
