I am in the Denver (South Jeffco) area and have been trying to get USWest to install Megabit Services DSL since last August. They kept saying that I didn't qualify because the distance was too great (approx 15000 ft). I can see the CO out my window and know it's about 3500 feet away. Finally I get on this site and find that Covad amongst others provides service through my CO so a quick check with Covad through here indicates 4300 feet and qualified for 700 plus kbps.
Speakeasy is highly rated here and they have competitive pricing along with backup dialup facilities so I selected them.
Order with Speakeasy placed on 16Mar00 for 608/128. They estimate 4 to 5 weeks to get installed.
23Mar99 receive email from Speakeasy with scheduled Loop Date (USWest install) of 31Mar00 and Covad install date of 01Apr00.
31Mar00 USWest tech shows up as scheduled and runs a 3rd pair across the lawn (to be buried later) and hooks up and performs a test with Covad which is OK.
01Apr00 still on schedule Covad tech shows up and makes a connection in the telco box outside the house. Next he comes inside and installs the Router (Speedstream 5260). I had already set the appropriate IP addresses from Speakeasy so the router just powered up, trained in about 5 minutes and I was hooked up. The total time with Covad was about 20 minutes start to finish.
02Apr00 I start testing using the tools on this site, in particular the download/upload test and find that I'm only achieving about 80kbps on down and uploads. I sent an email to Speakeasy.
03Apr00 Receive an email reply from Speakeasy that they are looking into the problem, which they are apparently having with some other users as well.
06Apr00 Speakeasy calls to ask if I will be available the next day to carry out some tests. I say yes.
07Apr00 Speakeasy tech along with Covad tech on a conference call perform tests while Covad tech tweaks something. After about 3 download tests I'm getting speeds at about 480kbps which is more in line with what one expects from a 608kbps line. Uploads now are at 107 kbps.
So.... I'm happy with the installation and the service. It's now April 13th and still going OK. No outages. A five star on all counts.
The only thing I wonder is how long it will take USWest to bury the cable across the lawn.
