After 8 years of flawless, rock steady service from WOW (Wide Open West) it was hard to leave them. I mean if it works, don't fix it, right? Well, U-verse made me a deal I couldn't refuse.
I had basic digital cable and internet (4M/500k) with WOW, DVR with TiVO and POTS with AT&T. I get all of that plus an increase in internet speed (6M/1M) with U-verse at a $70/mo. savings. Now I only have one (online) statement to review and one (automatic) payment to worry about.
U-verse really cleaned up my entertainment center and computer desk by replacing several components with their very small boxes.
The TiVO box is a boat anchor compared to the U-verse box and instead of the digital cable box + the huge TiVO box sitting in my entertainment center I now only have one small box. That freed up a lot of room, less wires and a cleaner look. The U-verse box can record several programs (4, I believe) while I watch still another live program. TiVO could only record whatever the cable box was tuned to. I also don't miss the cumbersome wireless internet connection TiVO required and the delicate remote IR transmitters that had to be placed in an exact location on the cable box and still didn't work if there was too much daylight in the room. I do miss TiVO's ability to record programs on it's own that it think I might like. I found a lot of new programs that way. I really like the simplicity of being able to control my U-verse DVR online.
U-verse internet is an improvement as well. Although the modem/router/phone box is larger than what I had from WOW, I no longer need a separate router. I am getting speeds very close to what is advertised and the 1M upload is a very nice enhancement for me. The only problem I experienced was very high latency with World of Warcraft. The router has preconfigured settings for a number of games and applications but World of Warcraft wasn't one of them. I found that a little odd since World of Warcraft is the largest online game in the world. The U-verse router allows me to make manual settings and after a little research and 15 minutes of my time I got it fixed. Small matter, really.
There have been no noticeable changes with my phone except for the battery back up AT&T installed. The call quality remains the same as I was used to with AT&T POTS and much better than any of the VOIP providers I have tried in the past. I really like the web interface to view all (or the last 500) of my calls and manage my voicemail and other features.
The installation went well. The technician was an hour late but AT&T called me ahead of time so I didn't mind. Once he arrived, it took him about 2 hours to get everything up and running.
I've only had U-verse for less than 24 hours but so far I am very pleased. They have exceeded my expectations.
