On 5/2 as indicated in a TOS change listed on a previous bill Uverse service will be capped at 250gb per month for my 24/3 package. Overage charges will result in the case of exceeding the 250gb cap.

I am of course opposed to this change to my service and not because I use more than 250gb per month but because I feel that caps limit innovation and hamper competition. Ebooks, Streaming video, VOIP online backups and Digital music downloads are all great artifacts of unlimited HSI and if companies like ATT are permitted to impose caps on downloads these and future innovations are at risk. People can make the argument that 250gb is a boatload of data and that anyone who exceeds this arbitrary amount is clearly using their connection for some unsavoury purpose and I understand that argument, however I would remind them that once upon a time a 56k dialup internet connection was fine for our needs.

Next I think of the limited vs unlimited bandwidth model and I must say that even though I'll probably never reach the stated limit that it still bothers me because a limit exists and I must be mindful of that limit. In reality its just one more thing that I must worry about. I don't own a cellular phone for just this reason. I don't appreciate metered service and have thus avoided them.

Third, I feel that my service should cost less now because my unlimited internet service has been changed over to limited. In my opinion if unlimited service costs 65 a month then limited should be about a 1/4 of the price. I'm also upset that this change occurred through a TOS change. IMHO unlimited customers should have been grandfathered into the system with new customers having limited service.

Fourth, the uverse usage page is still not functioning. When I try to connect to the page I get a message saying that "The U-verse data measurement report is currently under construction. When completed, you will be notified if your usage exceeds the allowance. Until that time, U-verse customers should not be concerned about their usage patterns for billing purposes." So I can't even see my usage to determine if I should be shopping around for another provider or not.

Fifth, I am a capitalist at heart and so I realise that there must be some consequence to ATT for this business practice that I do not appreciate. I think I will start by cancelling a second receiver in my house that I rarely use and will probably move to a lower speed tier. I'm may also cancel my pots service and go back to Vonage and I could probably get rid of some premium channels. In the end all of this will probably end up costing ATT about 15-60 $$ per month from me. I'm also going to stop recommending Uverse service to friends and family.

I've had a few hiccups over the years with my Uverse service that David and the others in the Direct forum helped get sorted. For that I'm grateful. It would be miserable to keep this service without their help so I've given tech support the highest rating because of this but otherwise their support center in India is garbage.
