within 2 weeks of ordernig online, I got the modem at my house. wow! it was so fast! months ago, i signed up with Bell Atlantic and Covad (Concentric) and they didn't even give me a confirmation email or phone call or anything! i thought maybe they lied about the availability of DSL in my area. so i gave telocity a try, since they had no contract. and boom! in 2 weeks, i'm surfing the web like i do at work (shared t1)!

it's a cinch to install. DHCP in your TCP/IP settings, plug in all the line filters in your house, and boom you're online. static IP is good and i like the fact that they don't care if you use a router or not. i have a hardware router setup (with the macsense x-router MIH-120) and have 5 computers on the internet at the same time!

speed suffers a bit though. i think that has to do with my distance from the CO (about 8000 feet), and the fact that many computers are sharing the connection.

anyone know what's a good site to test ACTUAL download speeds? i'm getting about 60K/s on good servers on a good day. I don't know if this is slow or not. at work on our shared t1, i get around that much with everybody at my office on the 'net...

support: well, their online support is non-existent. you have to call/email them for everything. i don't even know how to set up my additional email (POP) accounts-- supposedly i have 3. not urgent right now, but i'm disappointed that they don't have simple things like that on a "FAQ" or "SUPPORT" section on their site. no online support. and i hate calling and being on hold. isn't that why we subscribed to *fast* DSL in the first place? to save time and do things online faster than we do via phone or in person? anyway, the more things change, the more things stay the same...

overall though, i'm really happy with telocity. they're the only DSL people that actually gave me status of the order and had it going in 2 weeks. no technician even knocked on my door. i guess they did it when i was gone or something. anyway, i didn't expect the setup to be so easy and smooth.

telocity should expand (or uh, create) their online self-help / FAQ / Support pages on their membership webpage. it's badly needed for simple questions like how to upload stuff to your public web site or how to set up email or how to change billing information, etc.

    cheers.

    mike
