I was looking for an alternative to SR and found MagicJack.
They sent the plugin to me, it was here in 2 days and took only 5 minutes to set up.
As with SR, I connected the magicjack to the closed off internal wiring of my house.
The voice quality is excellent! Better than SR was and much better than the land line is too. Also you can increase or decrease the volume on the screen, but you never need to look at the screen for a call. The only thing is that your computer needs to be on windows for the calls to go through, however the voice mail works any time from anywhere.
You can take the magicjack with you and use it on any other computer with broadband. You can even take it with you internationally and than call the U.S. from there for free! Otherwise they are planning to soon have international rates.
I am very happy to have this product working so well already. All my calls in the U.S. and Canada will now be free for 2 years, as I signed up for the 2nd year for $20 additional.
The main negative for me is that MJ doesn't yet work with Linux, which I am using 100 percent of the time. So every time I want to make a LD call, I have to reboot the computer to windows. That's a minor issue but not significant, and they are planning to have linux and mac versions at some point.
In the meantime I also got a GrandCentral number in San Antonio, so my mom can call me from her phone for free. The GC call is forwarded to my regular number.
So far I have told quite a few of my friends about magicjack, and everyone of them is excited to get it! One friend is moving to England, and getting one to be able to call back to the U.S. for free!
