I ordered the home DSL service 384k/128k down/up speed. I am getting a special rate of $37.95 through the college that I work at. It comes witha dynamic IP and PPoE. It took about 3 weeks after I ordered it via the PacBell web site. I am about 1.2 miles from the CO.

The install tech came at 8am on 4/8. I got a 10/100 Kennsington PCI NIC card and a Westel speed touch DSL modem. It took him 20 minutes to do the wiring, add the filters to each of my phone lines and install the equipment. Things came to immediate halt from that point on. Because of the number of installs they are doing they are grabbing any of the line/Equipmet techs that want to work overtime. Their basic training doesn't cover enough trouble shooting for them. I have winroute running splitting my telephone modem connection between two computers. He couldn't figure out why it wasn't working after the software was installed. Even calling tech support they couldn't get things working. The tech finally got his laptop and tested everything up to the ethernet cable going into my system. He left me with a info packet hightlighting the info I needed to register and the 800 number for tech support. If I were a regular user it would have turned into a major customer service issue.

Luckily I am a computer technician and I teach computer repair at the college where I work. I spent about hour removing and reinstalling hardware and software drivers to get just the connection to one computer working. I spoke to tech support after a wait of about 45 minutes. They were friendly and helpful but they didn't have the answers to my questions. I am more upset that they aren't aware of the software thats available on their website for customers. The install tech didn't leave me with any software for the PPoE or the customized web browser. I found it on the web site after I finally got my connection working.

Using the speed test on this site I was geeting 400k/100k with no tweaking. Adding the medium registry tweak it is now 1 to 1.2 meg down and 100k up. It works great and I'm happy so far.

My only problem now is that I have yet to get both of my computers connected to the internet because of the PPoE. WinRoute lite doesn't support the PPoE virtual driver. WinRoute Pro doesn't work either. Now I waitng to get the DSL router from Linksys to get my network connected again.

I am really happy about having DSL and so is the rest fo the family. I have also installed zone alarm (firewall) to keep the hackers out.
