Unfortunately for those of us that are moving to Japan and don't live off-base (live in Navy Housing), we are stuck with only ONE choice for broadband: Americable.
While their installation is fast, Americable overcharges for their service. For their top-tier, the advertised speeds are 10 Mbits, and actual speed tests only max out at 6, average speed of around 4. Their bottom-tier service, advertised speed of 1.5 megabits, priced at $38.95.
Not only is the speed not at or near maximum, interrupted service is always unannounced or at random, either due to maintenance or unforseen events. Americable has been good lately on emailing the customers of future outages due to maintenance. But any other outages, you will not get refunds, like Cox did back in San Diego.
Aug 18, 2008: Americable is beginning to tack-on more charges on top of the monthly bill, which is $8 more than it was last year. Service is improving, but it can be made better.
Mar 23, 2008: Service has not improved despite charging more for their service and crappy download speeds. There are times when downloading screams at 500 KB/sec and then when it crawls to 10 KB/sec. Very difficult to predict when this happens. I wish they would contract an off-base ISP like JCOM where service is at 30 megabits for about the same price.
