[Update October - 2009] Still going strong with GVT, they started offering plans up to 100 Mbps, but its kinda confusing since they are mixing technologies, here's what they´re doing:

    Entry plan - 3 Mbps down / 750 Kbps up - ADSL2+
    10 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up - ADSL2+
    15 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up - ADSL2+
    35 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up - VDSL2
    50 Mbps down / 5 Mbps up - VDSL2
100 Mbps down / 10 Mbps up - FTTH GPON

So, unless you go with the most expensive plan, they wont upgrade you to fiber. Well, at least the fiber is here, I can see myself getting not long from now. I'm still on the 10 Mbps plan, and still no IPTV, sounds like ANATEL (Brazilian's FCC) didn't aprove yet the telcos to sell TV services, what makes me still have to pay for cable TV.

[Update March - 2009] Just got upgraded to the 10 Mbps plan (1 Mbps for the upload part). Paying $5 more So far so good. GVT is doing here the same that Qwest is doing up there in the US, bringing fiber to the node and than the same ol copper... Still, the service its way better than cable here, which already offers 25 Mbps, but to actually reach that at your home its almost impossible, as my neighbors told me...

Still waiting for the IPTV, but it should be here until the end of the year.

[Original Review] Well, I've been reading many reviews here for like 2 years, and now I feel that my english is good enough to write my own review here.

I know this is manly a US/Canada site, but I wanna give you guys just a little information of how are things going on down here in Brazil when it comes to high speed internet. First of all, I've been a Brazil Telecom (biggest ISP here) for yeas and they SUCK. When I heard that GVT was laying cables in front of my building, I called them. Got answered by a nice lady, who explained everything about it. I went with the 2 Mbps down / 500 Kbps up plan, plus the regular telephone service.

I didn't asked for a technician, but he came anyway, since they had to pass they´re own lines trought my apartment. It all went fine. Modem is a Siemens 4200, operating on ADSL2+. When I first run a speed test, there it was, 2 Mbps right away! But, the mainly thing that got me off Brazil Telecom's line was their international connections. I couldn't even watch you tube videos sometimes... well, can't say the same thing about GVT, they rock even when it comes to international connections! I did run a tracert to see who they got as a link provider to go outside of Brazil, and it seems to be mainly Global Crossing (also Telefonica for some sites).

Last month, I got upgraded to 5 Mbps down / 1 Mbps up, which is very good (at least for the upload part). They will synchronize your modem always a little over, because of the PPPoE overhead, so you always get 5 Mbps or more.

oh, of course, I'm paying R$110 for ADSL + Tel, which is like US$ 55.

I heard that they´re a planning to start offering IPTV also, which would be nice, cause I hate our cable company (NET - www.net.tv.br).

I live in Southern Brazil, a city called Passo Fundo.

sorry if wrote something wrong, I hope you'll get the idea.
    Thanks, Bruno.
