This leading BYOD provider is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, Canada but serves the USA as well.

They have a variety of inbound (DID) services, and outbound (termination) services, at good rates. The selection of DID numbers is quite good for Canada and the USA.

Prices are good (especially in the Canadian market), and Voip.MS has many special features such as IVR and subaccounts. However, there are no flat-rate outbound calling plans.

Company leaders and staff are very dedicated to expanding their offerings and enhancing their products.

28 December 2012: Voip.MS has effectively fended off a DDoS attack. These are a fact of life these days, so this will be good experience for the future.

20 January 2013: Voip.MS is replacing various servers which have given some problems. This should lead to enhanced reliability and consistency, and help the company be even better in the future.

Agree...

Yeah, I agree -- something up with their support system. I was having troubles with one way audio as well -- found it was due to NAT on my firewall. It's not a problem with callcentric as they handle their calls differently. I never did get my firewall completely setup, but in combination with Voxalot.com, I'm now having no problems with NAT as Voxalot handles firewalls similar to Callcentric. Now there's only a couple minor problems I'm trying to fixup on their system -- waiting for tech support though!

Voip.MS is a mature, solid performer

You say
One of the newer VoIP companies, making some good progress....
Voip.MS has made a good start, and I am sure they will continue to improve
I think they have been around since 2007 as voip.ms, and considerably longer in the voip business.

Some people might ge the impression from your review that they are a brand-new outfit, still working to get the basics right.

Having used them for over a year, my impression of them is that they have done a lot more than 'making some good progress' or 'made a good start', and that they are, in fact, a mature, solidly performing service.

They are forward-looking, with improvements under testing or development, and, it is my impression, they make changes only when the changes have been well-tested.

They claim to be the most feature-rich voip provider, and based on comparisons with other voip providers I have used or whose features I read about on their websites, I would say they are right.

call quality

How is VoIP.MS call quality when calling South Korea or China?

Scalability?

The company is heavily dependent on Asterisk technology. As growth continues, it will be interesting to see how scalability is dealt with.
Voip.ms has been around under that name for 3 years or so, and around under the Swiftvox name for longer.

I can't give much in the way of numbers but have the impression they are one of the larger residential vosps. Peter Sahui, from voip.ms, said they have 10,000 DIDs in use with one of their carriers, so there is that indicator of size.

Given that, hasn't the question of scalability already been answered?

Excellent point, but I was mainly referring to outbound calling (termination) which is routed differently.

But you are correct, the company seems to be handling this well.

Scalability can be a challenge for even someone like AT&T. It may have been one of the reasons that AT&T shut down their CallVantage VoIP service.

Call quality

I just setup voip.ms account yesterday and start use it today. I have been using several different voip providers recnet years. Vbuzzer for almost two year for international call. I just found voip.ms value rate is useless. I can't call any mobile number to China and Hongkong using value rate, no service. I have to switch to premium rate to make those calls. At the premium rate US$0.0225/min, it is even higher than skype's pay as you go(C$0.0225/min) and much higher than skype's monthly (C$0.0149/min), which I use it for long time. Call quality is better than vbuzzer ($0.02/min), but not good as skype. The voip.ms features and functions are excellent, but the value rates are useless at least for calling mobile. So don't be fooled by its lower value rate. For internationa call, I think I will go back to Skype for its quality.

Communications between members are no always free

I'm in Argentina. I was wondering about the free calls between voip.ms members, so I opened a customer support ticket asking if I can just call the other user by entering his username or he needs to have a DID.
They answered that "only US/Canada DIDs offer the feature for free voip.ms to voip.ms calling" and then gave me the subaccount trick... but what if I want to call his MAIN account?.....

Great service, Great Functionality, and Global coverage...

And all in one place. I'm not advocating that anyone should put all of their eggs in one basket, but within this one single wholesale provider you can spread it around the globe a little bit by picking a server in Atlanta for a couple of your DIDs, and then Los Angeles, for a few more, and London for a half dozen, etc.

Gripes, (I can't call them complaints really), about the lack of [userfriendliness and] documentation explaining their website is only as far away as the nearest online chat rep, and even a phone call, during business hours.

In fact, that would be my only nag, that their support folks go home in time to catch Monday night football so live support effectively ceases at a certain time in the early evenings.

They could hire out for 24/7 live chat support, but then, it is mainly the principals that handle your support issues, and having someone in New Delhi with a tier 1 support notebook would be like having no support during those hours anyway - So I'm happy with the stellar support I receive during the hours I'm normally not awake anyway LOL (Daytime ).

Like any software, and regardless of how voluminous or comprehensive the manual is, you have to eventually dig in and figure out for yourself how it all works, so I don't lend any credence to a full featured interface that adheres to industry terminology and definitions anyway, because it's just so much darned easier to google anything you want to know nowadays instead of using the local search features on most any particular website.

I'd like to give 5 stars, but until I find a provider that can give me flat rate termination to cell phones in places like AU, well, They're all gonna have to get 4 max

My rating = 4 Stars (Excellent).

Kindest regards,

Go into your "Phone Book", add entry of the "SIP uri" of the account you want to call or any "SIR uri" like "904@mouselike.org".
