UPDATE JAN 2, 2013 ------------------------------- Time to say farewell to TSI Cable. The service has been working fine, no congestion or reliability issues in a long time. It's time to trim costs, as I also have TSI 25/10 VDSL. I don't like the future outlook for TSI cable, as costs will rise when they have to switch to aggregated POI, as well as the capacity costs that are going to hold them back from offering a good price. Not to mention Rogers playing dirty pool with regard to speedmatching all the time. It's been 2.5 years, and despite some serious bumps along the road with regard to speeds, I enjoyed the TSI Cable experience. UPDATE OCT 10, 2012 ---------------------------------- It's been fairly smooth sailing since the horrors of POI congestion went away... I was switched to the new Comstock POI in Scarborough a few weeks ago. After an initial shaky week of cable going up and down (Cable TV was also wonky during then) it's been ok since... So far no capacity issues on Comstock POI. UPDATE JUL 11, 2012 --------------------------------- Well, I figured I'd update the review... the upgraded capacity has held up so far, and should for a while. Rogers will be adding a new POI in Scarborough area, so it'll offload some users from McNicoll. UPDATE MAY 30, 2012 ---------------------------------- It only took 6 months, but the POI upgrades have finally been done. It was delayed from late November to May. Unreal. McNicoll now has 5gbps with 6th coming soon. The speeds are finally back to normal. I will reserve changing my ratings for now, we'll see how long it lasts. UPDATE JAN 25, 2011 --------------------------------- No upgrades yet on McNicoll, bad evening speeds. No updates provided by TSI as to when Rogers will get off their mighty horse and perform the required work. At least they've put a stop sell (a little too late), so no more users can sign up and make things even worse... But no doubt even if Rogers does the upgrades someday, it will be the same ol story in a few months after that. TSI Cable is a bit of a joke now, with poor service, poor speeds and zero control by TSI of the product they sell. Not to mention prices are going up in February. UPDATE DEC 15, 2011 ---------------------------------- Well, it's been pretty good on McNicoll POI for the past few months since the 24meg upgrade, but POI congestion has started again, and it's getting worse... getting sub 10mbps speeds on weekdays in the 9-11pm hours and worse on weekends. Rogers has dropped the ball so many times on the POI upgrades in all areas that it's an absolute joke. TekSavvy doesn't even have an ETA, except that it will happen "sometime in the new year". UPDATE SEPT, 22, 2011 ------------------------------------ The McNicoll POI (Scarborough) has been upgraded to 3gbps backhaul. Had some mild congestion in the past week or when everyone got the 24mbps upgrade, but it is now gone. UPDATE AUG 31, 2011 ------------------------------- Just got the 24mbps upgrade! Apparently I was a tester that received it early. UPDATE AUG 28, 2011 ------------------------------- I haven't had any issues for many months now, aside for a short period of maybe a week when Rogers had something misconfigured with their CMTS and it appeared like congestion. However TSI placed a Stop Sell on McNicoll POI in mid August, to avoid congestion until the POI is upgraded to 3rd gig-e link, Rogers had scheduled the upgrade for early September. A 15-to-24mbit upgrade is also expected for TSI Extreme by the end of September. UPDATE APR 23, 2011 ------------------------------- Rogers finally upgraded the McNicoll link to 2gig yesterday. Speeds shot thru the roof, browsing is lightning fast and no packetloss. Now that they figured out how to hook up multiple links to a POI, lets see how long it takes them to hook up the 3rd gig link that has already been ordered for McNicoll. UPDATE APR 17, 2011 ------------------------------- Still congested, still no end in sight. TSI keeps blaming Rogers for not being able to hook up a 2nd Gig-E link to McNicoll POI (and others in Toronto). Weekends are the worst, with sub 2mbps speds and mega packetloss in the evening hours, making streaming video impossible without constant rebuffering. UPDATE MAR 28, 2011 --------------------------------- Backhaul congestion issues still plague TSI Cable. While the situation is not as grim as it was back in Dec'10, Evening speeds are around 6-7Mbit, sometimes worse than that on the weekends. They say they ordered the upgrades from Rogers 2-3 months ago. I don't know what to believe anymore. It seems like its a repeat every few months of the same story. UPDATE JAN 13, 2011 --------------------------------- Congestion on McNicoll POI in Scarborogh has been relieved yesterday. Had no problem saturating 15mbit at any time during the evening. However, I'll wait with updating the ratings for a few months, to see how long it lasts this time. UPDATE DEC 22, 2010 ---------------------------------- Congestion on McNicoll POI has been back since early December. No firm ETA's given for the backhaul upgrade, best I've been told is "sometime in January". Speeds dip below 3mbit on a regular basis in the peak hours and packetloss is bad too. UPDATE NOV 1, 2010 --------------------------------- I just switched from using the Motorola SB5101N (DOCSIS2) to a Motorola SB6120 (DOCSIS3) modem. Made a significant difference in speeds and stability in the evenings. I think after the 15/1 upgrades, the Rogers DOCSIS2 network has become a bit congested, some areas more than others. Mine wasn't too bad, but with the DOCSIS3 modem which supports downstream channel bonding, the change is evident. So to anyone considering the 15/1 service. Get the SB6120 DOCSIS3 modem! UPDATE OCT 22, 2010 ---------------------------------- It's been working well for over a month now, and finally today I received the 15/1 upgrade at no charge! UPDATE SEP 21, 2010 ---------------------------------- They fixed the congestion/packetloss about a week ago, by upgrading the POI backhaul connections to higher capacity. We'll see how long it lasts this time, before I change my ratings again. UPDATE SEP 6, 2010 -------------------------------- Looks like I spoke to soon, the congestion & packetloss are back... *sigh*... UPDATE SEP 3, 2010 -------------------------------- The congestion issue was fixed a week ago (Aug27), and so far it's been good. UPDATE AUG 16, 2010 ----------------------------------- Hasn't been a great cable experience over the past couple weeks, as TekSavvy's backhaul connection from the McNicoll POI (Scarborough area) has been maxed out, leading to horrible evenign speeds, often times below 1mbit. An upgraded 10mbit backhaul link has supposedly been ordered, but 2 weeks into this ordeal and its only getting worse by the day. I'm glad I kept my DSL, at least I have a usable connection in the evenings. I hope they fix this soon. UPDATE JUL 19, 2010 --------------------------------- Well, during the first few days after getting Cable installed, i noticed that there was consistant 1-3% packetloss at any time day or night on the McNicoll POI that I'm on... I notified TekSavvy via the Direct Forum and they confirmed the packetloss by pinging my IP with no traffic. Rogers was notified and they confirmed it as well, but it took a couple weeks to fix. It was fixed on Jul.16 and now the connection is perfect, no packet loss at all. So, a bit of growing pains, but it seems it's good now. INSTALLED DATE JUNE 29, 2010 -------------------------------------------------- So after waiting 11 days for the activation, the cable guy came earlier today and activated the SB5101N modem in 5 minutes. No SpeedBoost in my area of Scarborough though (Kingston Rd. & Guildwood).
