netTalk VoIP Service Review
A long time ago I promised to the DSL Reports crew that I would write a review on my experience using the netTalk TK6000. I have been using the TK6000 device connected to my Linksys RTP300 combination router/ata for a little over month. Before connecting the TK6000 device I was using the free DID call forwarding feature to forward all my calls directly to my RTP300 via SIP for over a year.
The free DID call forwarding can be accomplished either by forwarding the call to a POTS phone number or SIP address. The additional capability of having SIP as a forwarding option sets this service apart from the ultra low priced VoIP services. For example magicJack which offers its service for $20.00 a year only offers free DID call forwarding to a POTS phone number. This feature alone in my opinion is well worth the additional $10.00 that it will cost you to go with the netTalk service that is currently priced at $30.00 a year.
The TK6000 or netTalks newest device called the DUO does not require you to use a computer to run the device like magicJack does. Both TK6000 and the DUO can be connected to a Windows based computer system like the magicJack device. This feature comes in handy when traveling because you can use free WIFI hotspots to place or receive calls.
netTalk offers live Tech Support that can be called using a toll free 1-866 number. netTalk also offers a nice online support center that offers a FAQ section and the ability to submit a trackable trouble ticket. When you compare both these available options it makes magicJacks online chat support seem like a Saturday Night Live parody about bad infomercial products.
The call quality and reliability over the last month of usage has been good. During a few conversations the calls did breakup briefly. No one has yet reported any problems while attempting to reach my netTalk phone number. I have not experienced any problems with dialing out using the TK6000 device. As a point of reference you should note that I have tried all the top recommended DSL Reports VoIP service providers and while using them have experienced an occasional breakup during a conversation.
At this time I believe that the netTalk is a viable replacement alternative for a home phone service, however I would not recommend the netTalk service yet for any mission critical business needs as it is relatively new VoIP service provider who is still improving its products and VoIP infrastructure. The netTalk service will not likely disappoint the casual home user if you have a realistic expectation of a VoIP service offered at $30.00 a year.
Feature and Service Highlights:
