Well, I just read a Citywest review from someone who has decided to hide
their name. For the record, my name is Tim and I utilize Citywest Internet
and Telephone (not cell) services in my places of work, and Internet,
Telephone (not cell) and Digital Cable at home.
I have the 5Mbps internet service at home (ADSL). I see 4.44Mbps down and
0.43Mbps up on the Speedtest.net test which is physically located at the
Citywest head end. This is a best case scenario.
On the Speakeasy speed test to Seattle, a more realistic test as a lot of
distributed content is located in the US pacific north west, I see the
exact same download speed day or night, but the upload speed drops to
around 0.41Mbps best case.
On the weekdays in the evenings, I often see uploads drop a bit, however I
can saturate the circuit and get all of my bandwidth from Citywest
consistently. Accessing Usenet I with 10 streams I can saturate the circuit
for days on end (Citywest, if you are reading this, please don't throttle
my usenet, lolz).
Here is what prompted me to write this review. The other reviewer here
makes no comment as to what they have for personal technology. I have
assisted several friends and colleagues in Prince Rupert who complained
about Citywest. The problem is people go into stores or online and pick up
some crappy home router that has pretty colours on the box and makes
ridiculous claims about routing gigabit, haveing 3x3 mimo wireless, and
these same people who purchased them say that their technology is "top of
the line" when in reality most of this consumer class tech is simply
garbage. The worst of the complainers consistently appear to be people with
iCrap, but its also often these guys with 4 different browser bars,
Incredimail, etc, you know the type.
You cannot hold Citywest responsible for this. Doing so only makes you look
One person I helped recently, simply by replacing their router with a
pfsense router and a stand alone access point saw their internet
performance jump from 1.7Mbps to easily breaking 4Mbps down. This was by
spending zero dollars and recycling an 8 year old computer and spending
maybe 1 hour to do the setup. This person had several computers (a couple
of linux boxes, two windows boxes and a small netbook), and they all saw
identical jumps in internet performance. The person I helped simply
believed that Citywest was a terrible ISP and when we were done he had the
sudden realization that his lack of understanding of networking equipment
was the problem all along.
I work in the technology field and I see this ignorance and arrogance
daily, that sort of "my technology is working 100% so it has to be someone
For those of you that think things are better in places that have Telus,
Rogers, or Shaw for internet, you are sorely mistaken. Try getting hold of
their technical support and you will grow grey hair quickly.
Want technical support at Citywest? Walk into their store on 3rd avenue,
walk up to the internet desk, if it looks like a real problem, Keith comes
out from the back and runs line diagnostics right in front of you! Right
now! If he sees a problem between their head end and your modem, they
submit a call to the line guys and next thing you know they are stringing
new cables from the pole directly to your house. Show me one other business
anywhere in Canada that works this well with that kind of exceptional
I've lived in large and small cities (Rupert, Prince George, Mackenzie,
Edmonton) and been on the internet since 1991. Citywest is by far the best
company I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with and their service
delivery is second literally to none.
To the Citywest detractors, give your head a shake. And when you start
quoting that your torrent downloads are getting throttled,,, really? You
are upset that your ISP is throttling you stealing copyrighted content?
Don't lie and say your are downloading Linux ISO's, we all know you are
stealing Buffy or Glee episodes. And quit being the internet troll, no one
