The area I moved to is served by a local telco, and by a small cable company.
Went with the cable company for internet, as I was not forced to buy a phone line, and speed/price ratio is better. 10Mbps service is generally reliable, though sometimes it gets a little overwhelmed by other users. Bottom line, I'd still rather not pay the little local telco outrageous prices for slower speeds.
Internet is about $55/mo. for the 10Mbps service (and they do have lower speed packages - 2, 4, 6, and 10Mbps levels) + about $12 for "lifeline" TV + tax = about $70 total per month.
The company does not have a website, but they are in transition from "SCI" to "KCH" and appear to also offer HD (and HD DVR) boxes for TV.
All locals, except PBS are in clear QAM (which is very strange), and they still have analog TV service.
Installer was helpful, and even ran a new line to the house, tested signal, and installed fresh connector ends on inside.
Modem (a Motorola) was given out as a free rental, but must be returned when service is stopped.
