I was with Sympatico then transfered to Primus which was a nightmare but
thats another review. When I switched back to Sympatico I signed up for
$35/month and got my new modem (SS5200) in 2 days but it was DOA. The
invoice even stated 'defective'. A call to India later and started by
arguing whether there is a power switch on this unit. Finally I was asked to
reboot the unit which after an hour and a half still showed no signs of
powering up. After stating this and the fact that it was flagged as
defective they sent me a new one. Another 2 days and I had a shiny new
    SS4200.
I hooked this one up but no service for about a week or two. A couple calls
resulted in rebooting the modem and rebooting the pc to safe mode. Also I
was moved to a couple COs until they finally replaced the wires to my
    building and I got service.
It was great for about a year then I got billed for exceeding the 1GB
transfer cap. I called about the charge and thats when I found out about the
cap limit. Since I didnt know about the limit they credited me for that
    month.
Then I asked them about getting a static IP since I run a server on my pc
and the tech didnt explained that their server gave me an IP address each
time I dial. I explained that I wanted their server to give me the same IP
each time I go online. He didnt understand what I was talking about. A
couple more calls and I got the same story then finally I was told static IP
    is unavailable on residential packages.
They pitched the plan I currently have on a few of the above calls so I
called in to upgrade. About 2 more calls that week and it was activated. The
first 6 months I got credited on most of my bill(and it paid most/all of the
bill). My speeds took a giant leap and my 1GB cap seemed to disappear. 1GB
is my average daily transfer most of the time and no "extras" on the bill.
Finally my modem died and I called to order a new one. The tech ran me
through the standard troubleshooter but didnt know what the results meant.
Luckily I did and was able to explain it for him. He decided my ethernet
cable was at fault so he would send me a new one. When I told him that my
USB cable didnt work either he diced to send me both cables. Another call
the next day and he couldnt do anything because there was a pending order.
The next day I got the cables so I ordered the modem and got it in 1-2 days.
I hooked it up and was back online immediately.
My overall downtime after about 3-4 years has been about 1 -- 1 and a half
months and I am pretty satisfied with the service. I am able to host a
website and download torrents with good speed and very rarely lose
    connection.
