Update 04/01/02:
I have had Verizon DSL for 6 months. It has been great. I have very little downtime (knock on wood), and my connection is pretty good. Latency is not bad at all, and I receive about 95% of the advertised downstream bandwidth.
My speed tests (doesnt matter what time of the day) show 730/130 kilobits/second.
The newsgroup service is pretty good, and fast.
The only complaint I have is that I would like more speed. I am 16,000 feet from the CO, so I am getting pretty good speeds for my distance. Of course being a heavy downloader more speed would be beneficial for me. As Comcast has taken a 180 degree turnaround since @home went down, I have a feeling unless Comcast changes dramatically I will continue with Verizon as their service is great.
Update 11/10/01:
I spent an hour and 30 minutes today installing a POTS splitter at my nid today and running a fresh line to my computer. After hooking it up, I received speeds from the speed test of 724/115 (up/down). Overall, for the splitter and supplies, I spent 50 dollars, which I am sure is much less than Verizon would have charged for me to do this.
Update 11/4/01:
I am sitting outside on a lawn chair, and I have my laptop and my DSL modem on another one. We have determined that the cause of my slow speeds is the inside wiring, and I am just verifying this. I unhooked the pair from the NID, rewired a phone cord, and put it right into my DSL modem. From a sped test I got 727(down)/114(up) in kilobits, which is very close to the maximum of 768/128. They have offered to fix up the wiring, the charge is 95 dollars. I am content with paying that, the only thing is that a Comcast tech I saw on the streets claimed that in my township the cable modem service would be available Dec 1, which if it is (probably not) I would order. If its not, then I will go ahead and fix this wiring. BTW, im at 16,000 feet, and since I know that it does work, its worth the money, if only I could get the wiring problem fixed.
Update 10/06/01:
New modem, did not resolve anything. Speeds still 20-30 KB/s. Braindead tech support. I have revised my ratings for Verizon; it has gone from smooth ride to horror story. I have been down for at least 5 hours so far on Thursday. Tech support is pretty much braindead. The only thing they have going for them IMHO is that they can get you up and running quickly. Getting 20-30 KB/s is still much better than Dialup, I should add, and the fact that soon I will be able to cancel my computer line with metro calling and Earthlink will cover the cost of the DSL.
Update:
Yesterday I switched from Qwest to Genutiy. They had to give me a new user/password. Today I cant authenticate, so I used my old username and password with Qwest. Not sure if its because Genutiy is down, or maybe they switched me back. Also my speeds are not getting better. I am still getting between 10-20 KB/second. Overall it is better than 56k, but for me only 2-4 times faster.
Original Review:
As you can see by my member information, I first joined DSLR in 1999. Of course then I was waiting for cable, and found out about flashcom in the newspaper. So I signed up then via Covad. Eventually my order was canceled about 2 months later, because I was told my line length was too long. Verizon of course never would accept an order from me even though my CO was wired. Comcast, my cable company kept giving the run around on when cable modems would be available. Recently Verizon raised its limit to 18,000 for DSL (like most of the other companies out there), so last Saturday Night I signed up for DSL. I am at 16,000 feet. I was given an estimated service ready date of 10/05/2001, which seemed good for me. I got the modem in the mail yesterday, (9/27). Got an email last night saying my System Ready Date was 10/08. I hooked it up today anyway, and registered. At 10 PM tonight I was online! My pings in Counter-Strike were 77, which is great . However the same can't be said about my download speeds. On different servers I have been getting from 150-180 kilobits / second down and 117 kilobits second up. I have tried some tweaks, but couldnt really get it to work. Maybe verizon's network is slow tonight or something, I don't know since I have nothing to compare it too. My gsp is quest, maybe Genutiy is better? Again, I have nothing to compare too. I will keep a connection log, and update my review later on.
