UPDATE 2009-01-03:
Switched to Comcast ever since 2008-12-24 the DSLAM card in the CO for my DSL went bad; granted it was the holiday season, but after one week it was still down and the Verizon people didn't have any ETA or info on when/how it would be fixed. So I canceled my service.
If I had to guess, I think alot of resources are being poured into FiOS (which is fine by me if it gets turned on in my town soon).
UPDATE 2006-02-28 For the past week, the DSL sync light would flicker for awhile, then go back to solid. At first, I figured it was a phone splitter/line issue and replaced said items. It continued to happen for one more evening then it corrected itself. My suspicion is that the CO/authentication server is getting overloaded by the new $14.95 plan, but I have no proof so who knows...
I also set up three clients with DSL and that went very smoothly - in fact, I reached a tech support person to change a forgotten password and found him to be very well informed and willing to assist - it was a nice change from the frequent horror stories reported on BBR.
UPDATE 2005-08-25 Moved back home to Brick, NJ - ordered 3.0/786 DSL plan for $29.95 (my dad has Verizon for local and LD) - so far so good. I have three computers behind a router (need to get a new one soon - 802.11b is fine, but want g) and can use the connection for remote tech support. Wish the upload was better however. I am looking forward to FIOS and will order it ASAP when offered here.
UPDATE 2003-10-14 Moved to Arlington, VA to an apartment that offers Verizon Avenue, some offshoot of an acquisition by Verizon Online.
Good points: Don't need to order local POTS to support DSL line; apartment building has DSLAM in basement and I am wired for DSL (this saves roughly $20 a month not having to pay for POTS)
Bad points: Bandwidth is ok; I was getting 1536/135 in NJ; here, I am getting about 1488/119; while this is over 80%, it is a bit lower than what I was used to getting. Also, and more importantly, I no longer have access to Verizon's newsservers - personally I think that sux.
UPDATE 2003-05-03 WOOHOO!!! With Verizon's new pricing and speed upgrade, I should be getting 1500/128 by the 6th of May. The connection thus far has been rock solid, with a consistent rate of 730~/134 for the 768/128 plan. I hope that the ratio is maintained with the speed increase. I will update after the 6th.
Way to go Verizon!!!!!
UPDATE 2003-03-28: Things continue to go well. I am currently using RASPPPoE for PPPoE authentication and it appears to have slightly improved my throughput (90%+ level of official speeds).
In a few months, the cost will be going up, so I was thinking of getting the 1500 package - does anyone know whether DSL can be bumped up to that speed, or would I have to go through some reordering process?
TIA
PUBLIUS
UPDATE 2003-01-17:
So far, so good. Other than standard outage, which I would attribute to routine maintenance, throughput has been 720+/130+ consistently.
ORIGINAL POST:
Ordered Verizon DSL for one month free, six months at $29.95 (then goes to $49.95 afterwards). My DSL kit arrived on 2002.12.02 (ordered DSL on 2002.11.26 so given the holidays this was good). DSL was estimated to go online on 2002.12.04 at 6pm and is Dynamic IP.
I also ordered a Dell Desktop, so while I waited I decided to see whether the modem would sync with the CO - it did! When my desktop arrived the next day, I hooked up my modem, installed the usual stuff and BAM - my DSL was up a day early.
Having the 768/128 package, I tested it here and returned 735/135 - not bad (I am very close to CO however)
So far, so good - not sure how tech support will be, so I left that at 3 - the install was very smooth (see system specs below).
At the end of six months, I might switch to Earthlink, since for the same amount ($49.95 at month) I can get 1.5Mb/384k.
System Specs:
Windows XP Pro Dell P4 3.0GHz 512 MB RDRAM 120GB HD ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (yeah baby!) DVD-R/CD-RW
