This Verizon ADSL service is actually very good - the only problems I've encountered were part of the install process. For some reason while provisioning my line for DSL they decided to cross my line with another pair, resulting in a double dial-tone for EVERY phone call for over 24 hours. The person who took my order promised me service within a week, 3 days after ordering an automated anouncement was left on my answering machine pushing that date back by another 2 1/2 weeks. The service actually arrived about 10 days later.
Why Verizon states that the service is only available to Macintosh and Windows users is intriguing. Since the software on the CD is only provided for those platforms they've decided that their flavor of ADSL is only "available" on those machines.
Update: The service has been rock steady, and I've had two speed upgrades and a wireless gateway/dslmodem delivered. There has been no increase in price ($29/mo) since I ordered, and the speed has gone from 1.5/128 to 1.5/384 and finally to 3.0/768. Lets not forget that the Usenet news server has also been upgraded in the meantime, all while Optonline STILL hasn't gotten their news server act together.
Update (6/19/06): I'm an Optonline customer again. The "Triple Play" package including Optimum Online, Optimum Voice (phone), and iO (cable TV) for $30/$30/$30 is too cheap to pass up, especially since Verizon's DSL package was reduced back to 1.5/384 when I moved a few blocks away from my previous residence. It is impossible that this neighborhood exceeds the distance limitation for 3.0 service, but perhaps the house's wiring wasn't up to the task. I don't know, and don't really care right now. Optonline's news server seems to be working OK, but I'm going to have to check into a pay-service like Giganews (there's still not much else to do with 15megabits/sec on a daily basis).
