For a long time I had been content with the service, with one exception....the technical service people. Anytime I called I would be put through a protracted hassle to prove to them the reported problem was not my equipment, instead of simply taking the complaint and forwarding it to engineering. Yesterday the 518 area code experienced an outage beginning at 12:30PM (roughly). I called to report the outage about an hour later. They insisted I move EVERY computer in the house to the modem (which is in a closet in the basement) including my 85 lb. Mac Pro, to test to ascertain which computer is the cause of their system outage. (I refused to move the workstation, which wasn't even on during the duration) They insisted it was my modem and that it would take them a week (plus my $$$) to get a replacement to me. This grueling, torturous procedure took about 3 1/2 hours. No mention was ever made that there was a systemwide problem in 518. I found out 2 hours later when trying to call them back after thorough testing of my modem proved it was fine beyond the shadow of a doubt, and heard the recorded message while rotting on hold.
The problem was in a verification router upstream. It took them over 24 hours to repair it.
All they were willing to do for my time and torture was a 1 month credit. So, I get to look forward to this once again next time their system is out. Great. I won't be calling them again.
If there was an alternative to VZ in the area, I'd be there in a heartbeat. The service could even be substandard, I wouldn't mind so long as technical support wasn't so abusive. DSLR allows you to grade on a 1-5 scale. Shame they don't do "-5", that's what they truly deserve.
