I first got GTE DSL back when the company use to GTE. I called and placed a order for what they called bronze service 768kdown 128kup. I had the modem two days after I placed the order even though it was supposed to take a couple of weeks. I hooked it up and it worked out of the box. When Bell Atlantic and GTE merged and formed Verizon, and the price dropped I upgrade my package to 1.5mbps down 128k up. I have now gone through another price drop only 29.95 for the same service, this was recently after the MSN/Verizon deal. I cant complain too much except for the fact that you have to go through 10 layers of BS to get to a person who knows what they are talking about and what they doing. Also my original Fujitsu modem is starting to die after all these years and they want to replace it with one of those Westell POS. I know a lot of people will state they work just fine. But I have neighbors who have gotten DSL from verizon and have those modems and have nothing but problems so off to ebay I must go since Verizon will not sell me another Fujitsu. Other than that and the fact they still have the problem with transferring you to 20 different people to find out one thing, it is pretty good service.
One last note, I did have one run in with Verizons Security and Legal Compliance department. Back when it was GTE I was told that I could hook up a hub/switch and have as many out side (GTE assigned ) ips as I wanted. But that if I had a problem that and had to call them I need to have the modem directly connected to one pc. Which was no big deal with me since my main pc was close to the modem and the hub. Then two months ago I get this letter from Verizons Security and Legal Compliance department stating that I have been violating there Terms of Service more specifically the 1 ip per account rule. This had me fuming as no one had never told me this after the merger and even the senior techs I talk to knew I had a hub not a router and never mentioned it. What was worst is when I called them no one had any idea what I was talking about as they are mindless drones. Worst part about this whole thing is that there is no way to verbally contact the Security and Legal Compliance department. Which is ridiculous, I mean they do not respond to written or emailed correspondence.
To some it all up. Great service, Great price. But if you ever have a problem wish for a miracle as most of there so called techs are idiots.
Update : 04/20/2009:
I left Verizon DSL Little over a year ago for Rapid Systems, do to being able to have a static ip for 39.99 vs the 79.99 that Verizon wanted for the same service.
