Tech support is 24/7 and I feel quite good. I have contacted them several times, when I first got the service about how to set up mail, etc. A plus MSN's best padkage is free with the plan. Their software is not needed and I uninstalled all if. I felt it could be causing problems.
My initial plan was for 768/128 in July of 2003. My DSL Reorts speed tests averaged ~720/137. A couple of weeks ago I discovered a slowdown. Tech support when they were unable to solve the problem set up a Ticket for a network Tech to call me. He rebuilt my speed profile and corrected most of the problem, but the speed test indicated my down was now about 635 to 640. I called the network support department back on Saturday (toll free) to inquire about my lost 90kbps.
This timeafter checking my current records, they told me my distance to the CO or RT was 9670 feet, and they reset my speed profile to 1500/128 as they claimed I qualified all the way up to their "gold" package, which is 7100/768. Unfortunately this is only available as a business package at $209/month—Still an excellent price.
The top residential tier is 1500/128. Don’t know why I now qualify for higher speed. Could be a mistake in my records, as a few years ago I was too far from the CO for any service, or it could be that a RT was upgraded or a new RT was installed. In any event I know have their fastest residential tier for the same $35.00 a month.
I have had no problems for several days with this new speed package. Consistently holds synch. DSL Reports.Com Speed tests (from Beaverton Or to Seattle Wa.) run about 1300/137 consistently, and as high as 1310/138. Upload speed does not very much.
Overall, for me Verizon has been excellent: Good service, with very few problems, Good to excellent tech support in general. Good spam filters on e-mail, which works fine on my Outlook Express. They provide a free Westell Modem, one of the best that has not failed to hold synch. The self-install had no problems. When I hooked up everything worked the first time. Dynamic IP, which means nothing to configue, no PPPoE.
Overall, for me Verizon has been excellent: Good service, with very few problems, Good to excellent tech support in general. I would recommend Verizon with few reservations. I believe they are making an effort to be one of the best, if not the best providers.
09/25/07 : I have had no problems since posting this reviews steady good connection.
Someone from Verizon told me DSL Two is coming in September--October time frame, and that I am eligible for it--but have heard nothing, FIOS is available also (has been for over a year), but I am waiting on that.
Was notified recently of a price increase, but called retention and they rolled it back
