After several years of Charter I moved to a home that is about 3500 feet from the CO. Charter had been okay but was $10 a month higher than Verizon and also throttled newsgroups back to 128K. Signed up online on a Weds, received confirming emails on my order as well as a "your order has been shipped" email within 24 hours. Ready date was initially given as 8 days out from the order. Online status checker was unreliable, at times it said my order didn't exist, other times it said my ready date was being delayed. I received the self install kit 4 days before the ready date. Problem was the power supply with the modem was DOA. Verizon shipped me a new modem (couldn't just send the power supply). Meanwhile 2 days prior to the ready date I got a email saying the service was ready to go and I could set everything up. Used another power supply I had to get the modem running while I waited for the replacement modem/power supply to show. Had to switch the Westell 2200 modem to bridge mode to get my network (Llinksys BEFSR41 & 5 computers 3XP, 1 Mac OSX, and 1 Mandrake Linux) to play nice with the service. Typical speedtests of line are running 1468/370.
Update: Speed has been increased to 3MB/768 no problems, a couple outages of brief duration in the last year. Happy with service
Update 12/19/2007: Still happy with the service. When contract was coming to an end, online renewing offered me a price of $32 + fees a month. Called local business office and got it knocked down to $19.95 + fees a month for first 6 months, then $29.95 +fees a month for the second 6 months. Was told the business almost always has better pricing than the default offering available online. Anyhow the service has continued to be rock solid with a 3/768 line. My only wish is Verizon would quick blackmailing Massachusetts regarding getting a statewide video franchise and resume their FIOS roll-out (which has been suspended by Verizon because the state won't let them undercut the local towns).
