In August 2003 DSL became available in my small town finally! I went with the first available provider (not Verizon) at the time and used them for about 14 months. They were a local company and the service was rock solid. They could not compete with the pricing from Verizon, especially when you include the phone service & long distance package deals.
On Nov 8, 2004 I placed my order online to get 3/768 service from Verizon. The online form said 3/768 was $39. When I was on the final pages to complete the order it said I was getting 3mb service for $29. When I received my confirmation email messages it said I was getting 1.5mb service for $29.
Verizon includes a Westell Versalink DSL router (DSL router, 4-port 100mbps switch and G wireless all in one unit) for free with a 12 month commitment. The router arrived at my home via UPS just 2 days after placing the order.
My service ready date was set for Nov 16th after 6:00pm. On that day my old service provider stopped working. I plugged in my new Versalink router and ran through the Verizon software install on a spare computer I had (I dont have any need for them to install software or alter my settings on my main computers). All went smooth. The installation software will configure the router and create your account online. Everything was up and working fine. But I was provisioned at 1.5/384. I called and they upgraded me to the faster speed for the same price - $29 a month! Within an hour my speeds had been increased. Speed tests show about 2,700 down and 715 up. This is typical for Verizons service.
All together with phone service + long distance + DSL I am paying $15 a month less now than I was before when using separate carriers for these three services. And now I have unlimited long distance (did not have unlimited before) and DSL that is twice the speed. What a deal!
Verizon can be difficult to deal with at times since they are so large. But my experience getting DSL setup was pretty smooth. Ive had it less than a week so far and everything has been smooth.
I am happy with my switch so far. Im saving money and have faster service. I tried my best to stay with my old local DSL provider but they just could not compete with the price. At this point Im happy I switched.
