Memory jog isn't helping me too much. I got DSL back in Dec. 2000. I got the equipment that they sent before the ready date. I don't know if it was ready before that date since I had to wait for my son to install it anyway. I don't remember having any problems for quite some time. I think the problems started in Jan 2004 maybe. At that time I started having intermittant signal loss and I would lose the net for a couple of seconds or maybe a minute. I called tech support several times to describe my problem, me not being very computer literate. Since the loss never lasted very long and came at irregular times, it never happened when I called. By the time I got thru to a live person, the problem resolved itself for the moment. All their tests showed everything to be ok at their end. Finally I got thru to a tech and the problem happened while on the phone with them. They finally sent a tech out to my apt., but a snow storm was predicted, so the tech never showed up that day. Had to call to make another apt and finally got a tech here. It turned out to be a cracked line in one of the basements here in my apt. complex. He fixed the cracked wire rather than replacing the wire. I think that was the time I started to have irregular ping spikes while playing my mulitplayer game.

I had the 1.5 speed upgrade and it was nice seeing the price come down for a little while. I still have the jumping pings when I play, but all I get from Verizon techs is that I can connect to the net and that is all they help you with. I got the 3meg/768 upgrade and was hoping that the faster speed would help with my jumping pings, but it hasn't. My old modem couldn't handle the 3 meg connection, so they did send me a new Westell 2200 modem for free back in April.2005. I am not on any yearly plan and haven't been on one since I originally signed up back in 2000. Back then it was a yearly plan with a free modem and free installation kit and the first month free. Actual price I don't remember. I get almost 2800/720 speeds now according to Speakeasy speed tests. I still play UT 99 and I am still getting my ping jumps while playing. I play basically in 2 servers and it happens in both servers. I know I have PPoE now and I think I have had that since the beginning. I hope I haven't rambled on too much now.

I'm not sure how to do an updated review on this. I thought there would be another box to type in if you want an updated review. My monthly charge is now $2.00 less since I last posted this review. I am still on a monthy basis. I now have the Westell 6600 modem/router which I had to pay for this time. My previous modem started having problems keeping the correct synch numbers and I had to keep rebooting it to get the right numbers.. I was disappointed that I had to pay for another modem since the old one wasn't working correctly.. I am now on the fast path which has given me lower pings when I play Unreal Tournament, but I still am getting ping spikes. I recently had a problem keeping my connection and I got a tech to come here to my apartment. First tech support found a problem with my line and after a couple of days someone from the engineering dept. I believe it was said I had a line problem and they were going to send out a tech. The tech indeed found a line problem down in one of the basements here and he changed the line where mine was connected. I don't know if I am explaining this correctly since I am not very computer savvy. They had to change it also across the street at the central office. Since then I think it has been pretty good except for the ping spikes while I am playing. Some times I do notice some problems when it rains. I guess that's it until I do my next update. I hope I did this one correctly.

I should have put a date on my last update to this review. You can't tell where my original review ended and where my last review started.:( A few weeks ago I had a problem with disconns and reconns with my Westell 6100 modem/router. The tech I got on the phone without much troubleshooting said I needed a new modem. He promptly sent me a new one and it arrived like a day or 2 later. While I was waiting for this new modem to arrive, I figured I would try the Direct Forum here for Verizon and see what they had to say about my problem. The nice gal told me to have my son call up on my behalf and they would walk him thru resetting my modem with all my information as if it were a new modem. She said the disconns could be from my modem somehow getting the info mixed up or something or corrupted. He remembered how to do that to the modem and that seemed to fix the problem. Since I received the new modem which was the newer 6100, I figured we may as well use the newer one. Once again, he figured out how to do it with the newer interface and got me back online. This new 6100 was free this time, but I had to send back my old modem within 30 days for my current modem to be free. What bothers me though is that I had to pay $ 60 or $80. for the previous modem... I had to send back a modem which I paid for the last time because the 2200 had become defective. Don't think it was right that I had to send back a modem which I had paid for....My monthly fee just went up recently to $39.95 I believe now. I see a lot of members who said they were paying $29.95 monthly with no contract. So I got an increase of $2./month. I don't like now the new thing about this modem when it has features on it, that you have to pay to find out how to use the features that come on the modem, for instance port forwarding and DMZ. It's part of the modem, so the tech support for that should be for free too. I can see paying premium support if you need help in removing a virus or something, but not on how to use the modem/router....
