I’ve had Verizon DSL for over 5 years, since back in the Bell Atlantic days. I have a router, PPPoE, and dynamic IP.

There have been a lot of changes since I first got DSL, most for the better.

My speed has gone from 640 to 3.0, the price has gone down from over $40 to $30, and the service is more reliable.

I haven’t had to deal with the CSRs and TSRs much, but like any other company, some of the CSRs and TSRs are better than others. And as with any other company, when you call in and get someone clueless, you hang up and try again later. Usually you will be able to get a more informed person.

There have been various problems and hassles over the years, which is understandable for a new technology rolling out.

So far, any time I’ve had a problem that did require calling Verizon, I’ve been able to get the problem resolved within an acceptable amount of time.

Up until now, the problems have all been resolved.

Right now, I’m having the DNS and modem re-synch problems that many people are experiencing. However, the problems I have are not as severe as what many people are reporting.

So right now, Verizon rates an A-

    Update

    No problems lately.

    Update 10/07

I’d been on a monthly plan for years, but in June ’07, I got on a 1-year plan to avoid the rate hike. So it’s $19.95/month for 6 months, then $29.95/month. I’ll save a good bit for a few months and then at least keep the same price I had.

The connection is relatively stable. It does go through periods where the modem resyncs at some point every evening. Usually that causes a loss of connection & I have to power off the modem and reboot the computer. I can’t find anything in particular that’s causing the problem. Other than that, the connection is stable & I typically get a speed of 2.8Mbps.

    Update 8/08

Several months ago, my phone line and DSL were down for 5 days. I don’t recall the exact date. The problem was on their end, because I did not have service at the NID. Since I did not have phone service, I view this as a phone service problem, not a DSL problem, but I'm including it here as the repair may have actually improved my DSL connection. Or maybe not.

The day the Tech finally arrived, it took him all day, well into the evening hours, to fix it. I am not happy about how long it took to get a tech out to fix the problem, but it did get fixed the day he did show up.

My router died in June, so I replaced it with a Linksys WRT54GL. The modem does not resync as often with the new router. Don’t know if that’s a coincidence or not. Or related to something the Tech did when my service was out. Now when it does resync I don’t usually have to reboot the computer, it just reestablishes the connection, which is a great improvement.

As I wrote in a previous review, even though I have had Verizon DSL for many years, I had a one-year DSL promo-price plan. That plan expired around June 1, ’08. In mid-June I added a “triple” promo plan that includes Direct TV that was advertised as a Triple package for DSL, POTS and Directv for $99.99 plus various taxes and not-included costs.

The Direct TV promo gives me a DSL credit, so my DSL now costs approx. $25/month.

The way they calculate the discounts for this “triple “ promo package is overly complex. And they are telling me that even though I now have a promotional “triple” plan, the 3 services are each in their own separate plan because I ordered them at different times. And in September ’08 my POTS Freedom promotion plan will expire and therefore cost a lot more. So, in September I’ll see how the bill looks and try to get a better plan.

Bottom line for DSL: I’m satisfied with the speed, reliability & cost.
