I have been a longtime DSL subscriber -- the past four with Earthlink (using a Covad supplied line). I will say that I never had a problem with Earthlink. The line was solid and I loved the service.
Unfortunately, Verizon's prices were just too tempting. It makes no logical sense to pay nearly $56/month for 2400/315 (my Earthlink connection) when you can get Verizon for 40% less with faster speeds.
With the new line, I consistently test at 2800/680 and I haven't installed a home run connection yet. I expect speed to increase a bit when I bypass my internal wiring.
I've now had the Verizon line for two months and my only complaint was that the ping times were exceptionally high when I first started testing. After contacting technical service, I was converted to Fastpath and the ping times are now slightly lower than what I saw with my Covad line. In other words, the connection is perfectly fine for gaming.
I give tech support a solid A because they were terrific when I called. Maybe I got lucky, but they understood my problem and had it corrected within an hour.
I haven't had any downtime since the line went active so I guess it's time to cut off the Covad line (I kept it on my second phone just to make sure I was really ready to make the switch to Verizon).
It's sad that my only motivation for switching service was price, but it's hard to resist some of these deals. I feel guilty because I've put yet another nail in the CLEC coffin, but saving $250 or more a year is hard to refuse.
