I've had the service for about seven years now. The connection has gone down maybe half a dozen times since I signed up.
A couple of years ago, I had some major connection issues where Verizon had to dig up my street. The first time it happened, It turned out that the cable from the NID to the modem had some issues. Verizon ran a new home run from the NID to the modem free of charge.
The next time it happened, there were some issues with the wires under the street. The techs fixed the problem very quickly, with very little down time for me.
Since the street repairs were done, service has been flawless. Their phone tech support people are very good. The only negative is that it takes a lot of time going through phone menus to reach a live person.
Changed my account to dry loop a couple of years ago and the process went better than expected. My voice number transferred to a VOIP provider and the DSL line switched over automatically. There was no down time at all.
I'm still waiting for my neighborhood to get wired for FIOS. My 1500/384 DSL connection is consistent, but higher speeds, especially upload speeds, are becoming a necessity. Sadly, Verizon's hands are tied, because my Town Board has yet to issue a TV franchise agreement.
