I had AOL dialup for nearly a year (previously on MSN dialup for 900 years) and I was mostly satisfied until I wandered over to YouTube and truly realized just how slow my connection was. So many videos, so little bandwidth. Having had quite enough of the slow lane on the information super highway, I decided to try broadband and signed up with Verizon DSL for the "up to 3m/768kbps" deal which is 29.95 per month (first month free, next several months 19.95 and 29.95 thereafter. Cheaper than cable for sure and as I am not made of money (mostly skin and bones) my decision was easy. I ordered the service on a Tuesday evening and got the DSL kit Thursday morning. My Service Ready Date (SRD) was for the following Monday but by Friday evening I received an email telling me the service was ready and that I should install the kit. I was thrilled. I decided against using the CD which came in the kit since my computer is equipped with Ethernet. After following the clear instructions in the pamphlet I was online in about fifteen minutes. I immediately came to dslreports to test my speeds and found I was downloading at 2764 and uploading at 703. Helluva lot better than the "5 kbps down/nothing up" I got with dialup. So far the service is excellent and I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed but you know nothing is flawless. Especially technology.
June 6th (remember D-Day) 2009: Still with Verizon DSL, which is fine but I've been lusting after FIOS for some time now. I'm hoping my area of Brooklyn will be updated so that I can enjoy the phenomenal speeds some have been bragging about. Verizon DSL is still better than dialup of course but with the introduction of FIOS that distinction is becoming sort of silly. Anyway, if your choices are dialup and DSL, the latter choice is obvious and for what it's worth Verizon's DSL service is pretty steady (knock on wood)
