    My Other Reviews·New York Connect
Having moved to the boondocks behind the mountains behind the end of afterwards, I would have spent hours researching the multitude of broadband options available, except there were only two - a truly snooty, unfriendly, bandwidth capped cable company, and Ma Bell, who may or may not have been that cute little monopole girl att before she was married and a mother. Since in addition to all my other bad habits, I test a lot of stuff for linux, 80 gigabyte would mean one nasty flick and a few debian dvds, so the purpose of the broadband connexion would be mooted. I mean 15 meg down with an 80 gig cap is like a 600 hp car with a sixty mph speed limiter.

Now, the speed. Since most servers are nowhere near as fast as the possible download anyway, 3 mb down is not bad, but to watch a movie, or the hockey all -star game, we are at the limit of maybe. Spoilt by the ultra luxury nyct, I am indeed a vile pig. I know the techs there by name, and I suppose that NYC, in exchange for a violent, greedy, and ugly world does have things like nyct and a local lamborghini dealer.

That having been said, other than the wait time for a service call allowing for a blind man with ADD and dyslexia to read War and Peace, the service is incredibly good. I needed to a dry loop line and used the pots line dsl until it was ready, for personal reasons. I was going to cancel the pots version, but it has functioned so well, no need. I rang again today, armed with Pike on Bills and Notes and video of Goetterdaemmeriung, and was surprised at the unfailing courtesy of the woman who understood immediately why and what. She is sending me a return packing slip, which is above and beyond nice.

The pots line service, ordered over the internet, was ready in three or four days, speed is as advertised, cheap as hell, and dead reliable. On the other hand, I did have to set the westell router to bridge mode as there was little hope of connecting wirelessly with linux, due to some primitive firmware or hardware. I rang support, was answered within the time it took to perform open heart surgery, and given accurate info without a hassle as to how to set the modem. Again, cheerful, and correct.

How, however, can anyone take a pop only e-mail seriously? In order to delete the e-mails running evolution, one has to go to the website. Not a problem, but a nuisance. This would not affect the average windows user running outlook or OE.

Since Verizon was my only choice, it was my best choice. To be able to order the service on the net, have it ready without snafoo in about four days, and not have a single sub-cretin in customer service is a really good deal for the average customer. Business has 6 mb available, I am told, but one has to have the Pope ring them on a rainy Tuesday in a leap year. If FIOS does not come soon, my update will be finished as soon as I can chisel the stone tablets.

But for cheap, cheerful, decent service, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Just a quick update: life running evolution as a mail client with pop instead of imap is like trying to eat soup with chopsticks. Line has been ultra-reliable, speed steady. Why there is no imap server, and why the spam filters remove inter office memos from a law firm with a few ccs, but allow for ads for enlargement and reduction and narcotics from mail order houses in countries of which even I have never heard does amaze me.

There are plans to have FTTH in 2872.
