UPDATE 10/24/2010 I have had the service just over 10 years now and I am very pleased. I wish I were a little closer to the CO so I could get the 7 meg service but I am happy paying $29.95 for the 3/768. My service has been flawless.
UPDATE 4/5/2009 Well DSLReports asked for an update and here it is. Since my update of last March my service has been flawless. I am very happy with my DSL and recommend it to anyone. I will switch if my apartment building gets wired for FIOS but that is mainly to get rid of TW tv service. The 3000/768 is more than sufficient for my needs and at 29.95 per month a bargain.
UPDATE 03/24/2008 Well last week I had my first problem Speeds were abysmal from Sat the 15t through Sunday the16th about 3 PM. Thsi is the first problem I have had in over 4 years. Still the best.
UPDATE 10/18/2007 Just a note to say I haven't had one bit of trouble since my last review over 2 1/2 years ago. I have not had one minute of down time and speed is consistent and reliable. FIOS is in my neighborhood but not available to my MDU yet. I will jump when it becomes available.
Update 2/2/2005 I called and took advantage of the NY Metro area offer. 1 year commitment and $29.95 per month. I also got the new Versalik modem/wireless router. I shut off the wireless as I have no intention of using it now and I was able to pack away my Linksys router. I have seen that some people are having problems with this modem but for me it has performed perfectly. I don't think that you can beat this price and speed.
Update 11/28/04 In September I ordered the upgrade to 3.0/768. It took 2 days. The speed is great and the price isn't bad $44.95 base with a $5 discount. $39.95 for this speed is pretty good. There was a bump as they treated me as a new customer and knocked out my webspace but I had it all backed up so no biggie. I did get pissed because they didn't bill me in September and when the October bill came there were 2 months at the non-discounted rate. I called them and got a little hot and transferred to the Retention group. They fixed the price and gave me 1 month credit for my troubles. That made me a happy guy again. Update 5/22/2004 Well I now have 1500/368. Called on the 20th from work and had it when I got home. I the 3 1/2 years I have been with Verizon, I have had 3 upgrades and 2 price reductions. It may not be the fastest out there but the speed is fine by me. And the price reductions rock. Update 7/10/03 I hadn't realized that I haven't updated in a year. I originally got DSL in August 2000. It was 49.95 per month for 640/90. The price was lowered to $39.95 per month the next year. In June on 2002 they upgraded the service to 768/128 at no cost. In May of this year they upgraded the service again to 1500/128 and reduced the price. I haven't had to call tech support in over 18 months and have been down less then 4 hours in that time. (That is a 99.97% uptime). All in all I am very satisfied with the service. Update 6/9/02 Well I finally got the promised upgrade. It took an e-mail but it's here. I have tested at 727/136 and am very happy with it. Still no down time and the newsgroups and mail have worked for me every day.
Update 4-11-02 I must say that since Jan-Feb 2001 the connection has been flawless. My down time in that 15 month period is less than 10 hours. I called tech support once and was on hold less than 3 minutes. Found out it was area wide outage and was off the phone in less than 5 minutes. All told that outage lasted about 1 1/2 hours. My upload speed was upgraded in Dec. 2001 to about 115 and in Jan to 136 where it stands now. I still haven't gotten the download upgrade but am happy with a steady 508. All in all I say Verizon got their act together now.
I will admit up-front that I am a Verizon employee. I am in no way connected with DSL. I have read all the reviews on this board and was a little leery of ordering. I ordered the service on 8/1 shortly before the strike and was given an 8/29 Service Ready Date. On the 20th I called again and was told that the date was still 8/29. On 8/28, after the strike ended, I called and was told there was no date and they would check and get back to me. Needless to say no one ever did. I called sporatically in the next few days and was never given a clear SRD. Finally on the 18th I called and was told that the network work was completed on the 31st and my SRD should have been the 13 of Sep. I went home and checked and sure enough I had plugged the modem into the wrong jack in the adapter. When I plugged it in I got sync right away. I installed the green CD and logged in and setup in approx. 10 minutes. WinPoet worked fine on my old Pentium with Win95. I have a new PC with ME and was a little nervous about WinPoet so I downloaded RasPPPoe and installed that.. Installation was a breeze and after a few tweaks I was getting 509/82. I am happy. I will admit that I have had a few lockups since then but I don't attribute that to DSL as much as the software. I am going to look further and will report if the service is causing the problems. From experience with New York Tel, NYNEX BA and Verizon I know that once an order gets screwed up it goes to hell, but it seems so far that I have been a lucky one that had it work first time.
Update 3/26/2001 Ok I've had the service for 6 months now and haven't experienced any of the horror stories that others have. I have never lost sync and have been down a total of about 24 hours in 6 months. My sppeds are pretty consistent at between 485/75 and 505/83. I have had to call tech support twice. Neither time was I on hold for more than 5 minutes. The problem the first time cleared itself while on the phone and I never had to do anything. The second time the tech was clueless and all he could suggest was to call back later and see if there was an issue. I guess he had no clue what to do and just wanted to get rid of me. I rebooted the PC and modem and all was OK. I know that I should have done that before but I didn't. I'll know better next time. The mail has been fubared a couple of times but I don't really use e-mail so I don't know when it's out until I see it here and test it. All in all my experience is positive and I would recommend the service. Before the screaming starts: CABLE IS NOT AN OPTION HERE SO I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT. UPDATE 9/2/02 Service has been great. No down time since I can't even remeber when.Speed is consistent in the 700/135 range and no price increase. Usenet and e-mail have both been flawless and the 0.Verizon.* Newsgroups are terrific.
