Because I live in a rural area, my only option for high-speed internet is satellite. I was "lucky" enough to get DSL installed at 27,000' from the C.O. because of a prior ISDN agreement. My original speed was designated to be 768/128. In practice, because of my long distance to the CO, best speeds were about 300/100. Recently, Verizon offered an upgrade to 1.5meg/368 service. I was able to add this to my line with a new contract and change at the CO. No new hardware/connections at the home. Now, I sometimes enjoy speed up to 900/356, but usually in the 500/356 range. Frequently, for no apparent reason, the connection drops to 56k/300 for long periods, then just as suddenly pops back up to 600/356. Verizon has horrible service in my area. Luckily for me, I don't need to call them often.

Since my last comment, download speeds have increased to as high as 1meg+. The severe slowdowns are less frequent but still occur randomly.

Noise on my line caused a big problem over the winter and it took VZ about 7 trips and many more phone calls to finally accept my contention that it was THEIR lines, not my wires/router at fault. It turned out to be badly stretched wires between two of their poles deep in the woods. By the end of it, I had the personal cell phone number of my local Verizon repair tech (One of the few benefits of a small town!).
